You Played It For Her, You Can Play It For Me. Play It!: Casablanca
I recently found out that when the film Casablanca was made in 1942 they didn’t really expect it to be an extraordinary movie. It was one of numerous films churned out by Warner Bros. studios with a few big-name stars, a tight budget, an even tighter filming schedule (10 weeks), and recycled... Read full review »
"Here's Looking At You, Kid"
If I had seen Casablanca before, I did not remember it. That, in itself, proves I had never seen Casablanca before. The movie is unforgettable. I didn’t know where “Here’s looking at you, kid” came from. Now I know. It came from Casablanca. Those words and the song, As Time... Read full review »
Everybody Comes to Rick's
The usual suspects:
After Pearl Harbor ("Dec., 1941 in Casablanca") a diverse lot of refugees was trying to come to America, getting squeezed through French Morocco and bottled up in Casablanca, awaiting an exit visa. Two German couriers coming by train to Casablanca have...

They Don't Make Movies Like This Anymore...At Least We'll Always Have CASABLANCA
Aside from perhaps Citizen Kane, no other American movie has as much power as Casablanca. It seems to be that each passing year it gets more and more popular for my generation because of how well it captured the time period in the early forties and its romantic ideals.
Not only is it the...

What a wonderful love story
I didn't understand why so many people would rave about Casablanca when it was such an old movie. I mean, who watches old movies anymore? That was until I watched it myself. I grudingly put it into the DVD player with so much skepticism. I was pleasantly surprised to see it, though. It turned out... Read full review »
Knock On....
Casablanca is a much lauded movie about a shlub that owns a bar in Casablanca. He struggles but eventually does what will help the ally cause during WW2. Most known for its array of memorable lines, though its story is rather average and boring. Also of note is the fabulous Dooley Wilson singing... Read full review »

Most Classic of Classics
Classic movies (the black and white kind) are movies that I have grown into, they're the kind of movie you began to like when eye-candy and special effects become tiresome. I tell you this because you are likely only looking into this genre because you are also growing into the classics.
As...

WWII, A Hollywood Diary (Casablanca)
What more can be said about a film that sets a standard not easily matched today, even with multi million dollar budgets? Well, Casablanca is more than just a romantic episode in an exotic locale. This film is an interesting look at unoccupied Morroco during the early stages of what we now refer to... Read full review »
A wonderful classic...
Casablanca is a classic, one that I tend to pull out and watch at least once a year. The only thing that keeps me from five stars is the ending. Although the story is complete, I always wish for a better end. The love triangle is devastating from the beginning, but add the danger and desperation of... Read full review »
Hollywood's Best?
I remove nothing from Casablanca. It's a good movie, even a great one. But when you already watch a movie for the first time bursting with over-the-top expectations, a movie has to be better than just great. And when I first saw Casablanca back in my aspiring filmmaker phase, my conclusion was that... Read full review »
A Movie Time Won't Forget
I don't remember the first time I watched this film. It seems I have always known it; have always known Rick Blaine--played beautifully by a brooding Humphrey Bogart--and the story of everyone's desperation for the letters of transit to get out of Casablanca, being held captive under French and... Casablanca: The Best Movie Ever Made
It is fairly easy to pick the worst movie ever made; a lot of people are in agreement that this egregious honor goes to Plan 9 from Outer Space. Casablanca [VHS]
A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh
