MP500 is an excellent value
Pros
Printer and ink is of exceptional value. Printer drivers and software a breeze to setup.
Cons
The scanner seemed extremely slow in operation.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I recommend the MP500 for budget-minded home-users who want photo-quality printing capability in a multi-purpose device.
I did a fair share of research before settling on the MP500. Although I had already made my mind up, a Canon rep at Best Buy closed the deal when demonstrating what was perceived to her as its primary strength in ink cartridge value: the Canon ink cartridges contained more ink on the dollar than competitors.
I was able to carefully set up the printer and install it on 2 machines operating Windows 98 and Windows XP in about 1 hour. Because I have only the first Windows 98 release on my older PC, some of the functions are non-operational and likewise received a few error messages during installation. No problem, the MP500 still has the capacity to print from the computer, which is all I needed. There were no problems at all with the XP laptop.
I bought it for $150, and additional sets of cartridges set me back another $80. I can see that the printer is pretty much a throw-in: it's the ink that will get you, but that can be said for any printer. It's a moderately sized machine, so you'll need room somewhere convenient. The paper capacity isn't great, but it wasn't designed for business use. There is plenty of easy access to the cartridges, and LCD will allow you to use the machine without a computer for some functions.
