Canon Pixma iP4000: A Great Photo Printer

Pros Quiet, Great Print Quality, Duplexing
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great printer for the price. You'll love the fantastic print quality, especially for photos.
The Canon S750 that I had purchased about three years ago started having problems with the print head. Instead of replacing it out for a new one, I figured that I would just get a new printer and give the S750 to my sister. I was looking at upping the photo quality of my photos anyway.

After eyeing the more expensive line of Pixma printers from Canon and realizing that I am not made of money, I settled on the iP4000, a decent printer at the $150 price point.

What You Need
Any PC or Mac with available USB or printer ports. Operating system compatibility: Windows XP/Me/NT 4.0/2000/98, Mac OS 9.x, OS X v10.2.1 to 10.3.x.

In the Box
In the box came with the printer, the software CD, the print head, and the ink cartridges. Not suprisingly, the printer package did not come with a cable to connect the printer to the computer, since nowadays, no printer comes with the cable included.

One major plus about this printer is the print head mechanism can be removed from the printer and replaced as necessary. This comes in really handy if your print heads ever get clogged or jammed.

Another plus is each color has its own separate ink tank (Black, Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow). With some printers, the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow inks were lumped into one cartridge called color, so if you only ran out of one certain color, you would have to toss the entire cartridge, thereby wasting ink. Canon's separate ink system eliminates waste and can sometimes save you money. However, I've noticed that I have never switched out an ink cartridge by itself – usually, all the inks would run out at approximately the same time.

Ease of Use
It is pretty simple to install and set up. The setup poster basically walks you through the steps of installing the printer. The print software is also easy to use. It tells you the remaining amount of ink in your cartridges, the current status of the print job, and any error messages.

Performance
This printer is as quiet as other Canon printers I've owned. You can always rely on Canon to have quiet printers.

Paper handling is great. You can actually pull paper from two sources – from the standard sheet feeder from the back of the printer, or from a paper cartridge that loads underneath the printer. You can load regular paper in the sheet feeder and photo paper in the paper cartridge so you can print photos without having to switch your paper.

Print speed is great as well. A thirty page report finished printing in about 5 minutes. 4x6 prints can be cranked out in under 30 seconds a piece.

Also of note is the Pixma iP4000 comes with built-in duplexing. This means that the printer can print on both sides of a sheet of paper. If you do a lot of printing, this can help cut down on the costs of paper.

One thing to note is that this printer is PictBridge compatible, which means you can directly plug your digital camera into the printer using your USB cable and print out your favorite images with ease. While I have never found a use for this feature, I can imagine the convenience it offers to those getting started in digital photography.

Image and Print Quality
Text: Text comes out decent enough for presentation purposes. If you really look closely and analyze text, you can see some slight fuzziness at the edges of letters. If you're looking for laser-quality text, I'd recommend going for a laser printer, but for student and report uses, the printer is just fine.

Photo: This printer is amazing with photo prints. You can definitely get close up to the print and not notice any signs that it was a printed photo. The colors are vivid and bright and this printer more than suitable for home or office use. Coupled with the fast print speeds and borderless printing option, you can literally have your own photo lab in your own home.

Bottom Line
This printer a great all around printer. With decent text and amazing photo capabilities, the Pixma iP4000 definitely fits my needs and most likely fits the needs of those looking for a good photo printer at a modest price.
