2 printers out of the box do not work. All installation instructions followed.

I read the reviews - bought the MP780 - and it does not print correctly. I exchanged it and the second one was even worse. Canon support told me to take it back but could not explain what was wrong. Are there any other people having this problem? I really want it to work but it won't even align the print head and the test prints are WAY off.
We were trying to upgrade from our MP730 whose print head went out after two years of constant use. I'd love to get one that will work.
