Canon EF-S 18-55 mm F/3.5-5.6 II USM Lens

Compact and lightweight, the Canon EF-S F/3.5 zoom lens is designed for EOS Digital Rebel and 20D SLR cameras. The Canon USM lens lets you adjust the focal length between 18 and 55 mm to shoot the magnified images of an object at a minimum focusing distance of 28 cm. With an aperture range of f/3.5-22, this Canon EF-S F/3.518 mm lens allows you to capture bright outdoor pictures. The 75-degree wide angle coverage of this 18 mm lens facilitates standard format pictures. With a construction of 11 elements in 9 groups, this Canon EF-S F/3.5 controls the performance of the lens for providing high quality images. The 58 mm filter protects the Canon USM lens from dust and grease.

Pros Low price, decent performance
Cons Low sharpness wide open, not best for low light

I have gotten this Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens with a Canon Digital Rebel kit and later I got the version II wit the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Both are very similar and unfortunately share similar flaws.

Pros decent speed, good range
Cons cheap lens, focus ring has play and is not tight.
Recommended it? No

I started out with this lens and it was ok.  If I had to do it over, I would just buy the body of my T1i and then purchase the Canon 50mm 1.8.  It's a fantastic lens that you can usually find for under $100.  Having a prime lens teaches you how to frame things to make the picture... Pros Fairly sharp for how cheap. light quick and easy to use. cheap
Cons soft wide open. plastic. loud motor. slow focusing. smallĀ apertureĀ cheap.
Recommended it? Yes

For such a cheap piece of equipment this thing works fairly well. It is much better then the previous incarnation without IS though I don't believe it is the IS that makes the world of difference.
