Delivers on what it has advertized
Like so many people, I bought this to replace my kit lens. In my case that's the 18-55mm IS associated with the XSI. The main issue I had with that lens was the variable (and small) aperature. I wanted constant 2.8 without sacrificing zoom or IS. That's what you get here.

Nearly "L" quality at a full "L" price
The Canon 17-55 IS lens seems to be a bit of a conundrum. Priced in "L" territory the 17-55 falls short in a few key areas that will leave veteran photogs scratching their heads trying to figure out just what Canon was thinking.

Expensive non-L lens
It carries a L lens price tag and it is made of some L lens elements. Very sharp across the f/stops even wide open at 2.8... Comparable to 24-70/2.8L and 17-40/4L sharpness at the corresponding widest apreture. Focus is very fast and zoom ring is smooth.
