Showing its age, but well worth the money

Pros Typical "L" quality standards, and a very usable focal length.  Great for...
Cons Dated design, lack of weather sealing, heavy, and expensive.
Recommended it? Yes

Canon is known for their world class "L" Series optics, and the reputation is well deserved.  In fact, it was that red line on the end of the lenses that drove me to choose Canon over Nikon.  My initial purchase included three "L" Series lenses (17-40mm f/4L, 24-70 f/2.8L, and the 70-200mm f/4L)... Comparison with Sigma 80-400, Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 200-500

Pros Fast focus gets even faster with focus limiter. Image stabilization, build quality.
Cons Zoom lock ring needs 2 hands to operate. Not razor sharp at 400mm. Expensive.
Recommended it? Yes

Note: I originally reviewed this exact product two years ago, and it has been one of my more popular reviews. For some reason, the original review disappeared from Epinion's search engine results. Hence, I've resubmitted it with minor corrections and clarifications. At least three of my lens... Read full review »

An amateur buys a pro lens

Pros Incredible image quality, image stabilization
Cons BIG, HEAVY AND EXPENSIVE
Recommended it? Yes

This is a lens designed for professional use, and it has all the benefits and drawbacks of Canon's L series of lenses. I bought it to replace the Canon 75-300 f4.0-5.6 lens--I was dissatisfied with the optical quality and lack of image stabilization. Though it took some getting used to, I am now... A LOT of lens and a LOT of satisfaction!

Pros Sharp, well-built, excellent IS and USM, superb range
Cons Heavy to carry around, expensive (but worth it!)
Recommended it? Yes

It is always hard to know where to start with lenses like this as I don't want to tell you just things you can work out from the title. So telling you it has a wide focal range is pointless, of course it does. The aperture range is decent for this range though you would be less likely to use this... Read full review »

Not perfect, but better does not exist (yet).

Pros Long Reach, Optics, Image Stabilized
Cons Weight, Push-pull rather than Rotating Zoom, Battery drain
Recommended it? Yes

First, a quick admission. I also own a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens. That lens is simply the finest in existence for that zoom range, in terms of quality and ease of use. So if my needs fall under 200mm, I do not use the 100-400mm lens. The image quality of the 70-200mm beats it, hands down.

Pros Fantastically sharp images. Easy to operate and will spoil you!
Cons Expensive. Might be a bit too much for a weekend photographer.
Recommended it? Yes

A few months ago it was time for me to replace my aging Canon EF lens for a more efficient variable zoom lens that took extra sharp images. This lens would be use for my youth sports photography business. The lens I chose had to be resilient because I was going to be shooting with this lens during... Read full review »

Pros Image Stab. Great optics. Flexibility
Cons Heavy, long.
Recommended it? Yes

This Canon lens is for serious photographers only. I use this lens for day and nighttime athletic contests. This lens allows slower shutter speeds while hand-holding. Optics are of highest quality. A bit on the heavy and long side, not a lens to tote around lightly. Comes with a tripod ring,... Read full review »

Pros Image quality, Image stabilization, sturdy, non-rotating zoom
Cons cost, weight (unavoidable)
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this lens for my Canon D30 digital camera. I wanted a zoom lens to take wildlife photos without having to sneak up on animals. This lens is terrific for that kind of work and several other applications.

One review mentioned that the non-rotating zoom was a "con" It's not if you... Read full review »

Pros Image quality, image stabilising feature, zoom range
Cons Not cheap
Recommended it? Yes

This lens is a major purchase, as the typical retail price is $1,400. However, if you are keen on sports or wildlife photography the price is fully justified.

The image quality is superb, very sharp, great colours. I first used this lens to photograph a rugby game, and the players were... Read full review »

best lens in this range

bybridegam May 21, 2001

Pros Great Photographic results-built like a tank
Cons size weight and cost
Recommended it? Yes

This lens is large, heavy and fairly expensive (aprox. $1600), but if you take pictures at action events, or candid shots of wildlife, you will find nothing else that will give you the range and quality of pictures that this lens will.
You can buy a lot of cheaper lenses(at least in the... Read full review »
