Pros The lens delivers some amazing looking photos
Cons I do miss the image stabilization functionality.

It might come as a shock to some around here but my passion - my other passion other than crappy exploitation flicks from the seventies, I mean - is photography. I've been shooting photos as long as I can remember, back in the seventies with a crappy Kodak Instamatic X-15, through the eighties with... Read full review »

I bought this Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens on a whim. I was looking for a different lens and happened to find this on Craigslist for a really good price. I had never used a true macro lens before and it really opens up a lot of extra fun and really expanded my range of subjects. I shoot with a... Read full review »

Love Macro Photography - this is the lens for you

byKenen Apr 8, 2010
Helpful? 1 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Good value, Good Quality, Quality Construction
Cons Bulky, Bad in Low Light
Recommended it? Yes

This is a fantastic lens for taking macro pictures. It takes a little bit to get used to it at first and figure out how to work with the narrow depth of focus, but once you get the hang of the lens, you will love it. Auto focus usually works great for those times you are trying to focus in on a bee... Read full review »

Cons Bulky

I love this lens!!! Its great for art photography or for doing upclose detail for product photography, I have used this for these purposes and so much more. You can get amazing clear detail even in lower light. It is a weighty lens, but it doesn't seem to effect its normal use. It can be... Read full review »

Canon's 100mm Macro lens is a keeper.

bytheuerkorn Jul 19, 2009
32 Helpfuls 33 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Minimum distance (310mm), fast optics, great sharpness, good for portrait and Macro
Cons No environmental seals, no IS, relatively long
Recommended it? Yes

Optical quality has become more and more of an issue as digital sensors are more dense with any new release and already surpassing standard film grain. Hence the sharpness (a.k.a. contrast) of a lens is more important than ever. Prime lenses are at an advantage as moving parts are kept to a minimum... Read full review »

Pros Sharp sharp sharp; manual adjustment for autofocus; great contrast, color.
Cons Have to back up a long way for portraits and regular shots.
Recommended it? Yes

You've heard "sharpness" tossed around, and you may think you know what that means. But unless you've been shooting with L-series lenses, you'll see so much more detail than before, you'll have a whole new appreciation for a "sharp" picture.

Ever notice in Photoshop that when you blow up a... Read full review »

Photography - buy a camera and start shooting, right? Not if you are serious about it! I have owned cameras since I was in grammar school and the passage of time has taken me from a Kodak to a digital SLR. I have a family to consider so adding to my camera gear has been a long, slow process. I have... Read full review »

I am a somewhat versed, but definitely not professional, hobbyist photographer. As such it is my lot in life to improve my equipment--my lenses, my camera, my flash, etc. This is a never-ending job. One that exists for all photographers with SLR equipment regardless of level of talent or... Read full review »

An honorary "L" series lens!

Pros Incredible image quality. Well built piece of glass
Cons Why didnt I buy one sooner?

There is a short list of lenses that every amateur photographer should have in their bag-- basically, a long zoom and a short zoom. When I recently purchased my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L, I had satisfied my desire for a high quality long zoom, and I thought that I had found what would be my favorite... Read full review »

Well, after lots of umming and aahing around (or as my wife called it 'faffing around'!) I could not put off the decision any longer. I have always loved macro but have felt my limits were being exposed by using just extension tubes or close up filters. I needed the right tool for the job and a... Read full review »

Pros Amazingly crisp, sharp, great price/performance, f/2.8!, beautiful bokeh, fast focus, USM
Cons heavy (a lot of glass!), cost (its worth it!), no lens hood!

This is truly a great lens. Up until this point, all of my lenses were zoom lenses and I was worried that I may be at a disadvantage shooting with a prime. I was wrong. This lens, forced me to rethink some of my shots, and it forced me to move instead of moving the camera.

The lens also... Read full review »

I use a Canon 10D and wanted to get a solid performing macro lens. The Canon EF100mm Macro lens is fantastic! Pictures are crisp with true color rendition, and AF works superbly. It was Thursday that I bought a Sigma 105mm macro-focusing lens. Friday, the auto-focusing mechanism failed and I upgraded (paid a bunch more money) to Canon's 100mm, f:2.8, macro lens.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens

This telephoto macro lens is capable of focusing to life-size (1X) without attachments. Although it replaces the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, it is a completely new design. It incorporates a ring-type USM giving quiet, high-speed autofocus. The full-time mechanical manual focus gives very smooth manual focusing. For the first time in a 1X focusing telephoto macro lens, inner focusing is used. The lens length remains constant and a long working distance of 149mm makes worrying about getting too close to the subject unnecessary. Also, during focusing the front ring does not rotate making use of front-mounting accessories like macro ring lites simple and effective. Three-group floating focusing construction uses three independently moving groups, which holds focusing-related changes of aberrations to a minimum giving excellent image quality all the way from infinity to life size.
