KISS THE FLOOR WILY
Pros
one of the best collections I have ever played
Cons
Mega Man 8 is a bit screwed up in the sound department.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Keep Licking Wily and next time I'll used Pinsol.
Well despite it saying Mega Man's 15th anniversary, it's a little late and it's more like a 16th or 17th anniversary collection, but either way it's a whole lot of mega. When I heard that this was coming out last October I didn't know if I could wait till February, guess I could, plus 4 hold backs. But now that it's out this is got to be one of the best complication packs ever.
The games.
This pack contains 10 mega man games, 8 from the classic series, plus 2 never released arcade fighters. The 8 games are still has good has people remember all solid shooters, and fun game play.
The game play in these games are easy to describe, your mega man and your out to stop Dr. Wily and his band of robots. To do this you pick a robot master to fight, go through his stage and beat him and take his weapon, use said weapon against another robot master that is weak against it and then repeat 8 times. Then you go to Dr. Wily's castle and battle through more stages to make Dr. Wily lick the Mr. Clean off the tile in his lab.
While none of them really changed the formula they just added to it. Mega Man 2 added energy canisters and passwords, Mega Man 3 added Rush, 4 added a chargeable blaster, 5 included beat, 6th added Rush's jet pack adapter, 7th added his rival Bass, and 8 had anime cut scenes.
I'll add in links to all of my game reviews on the 8 regular games at the bottom of the review
Has for the 2 arcade games go well there just a small diversion, if you can play more then an half an hour at these then you have more endurance then I do. Basically there both Mega Man battle rush modes. You get to choose between Mega Man, Bass, and Protoman (and Duo in the 2nd game) to blast the bosses. In the first one you get to pick which games the bosses came from and then fight through in a boss rush battle angst all the bosses, and then battle Wily in his castle. The next one is a bit better, while it's the same thing they mix the boss battles up a bit more, no longer are they from the same game (or group of games) but there more mixed, they also made it a more fun two player experience has when you kill a boss you have to dash to get the enemy weapon energy. But the games are short and there's nothing that I would consider deep in there game play, but on the bright side this is about the only time that you get to choose Protoman has a playable character.
Ports.
The ports in the game aren't to bad, there a few things fiddle with that nitpickers will be bad at. A few music intro's have been changed, and a few lines have been changed to correct the spelling errors. But the most part the games here are pretty much done like they are in the originals. With the exception of Mega Man 8, which has, some pretty messed up sound. They cut out all the music intro's, and then the voice acting is terrible. Now I know it had some of the worse voice acting to begin with, now it's bad VA on a scratched Alvin and the chipmunk tape sound effect. Just listen to Aqua man's voice and you'll see what I mean. But 7 out of 8 isn't to bad.
The only problem with the rest of the ports is the occasional flash and flicker that come out of the games like they did back in the day. It's a minor squabble and it rarely happens but it still happens.
Of course these are if you keep the game has straight ports and not fiddle with the option screens. For the starter there is navi mode in all the NES games. These clean up the weapon select menus a lot, give you a power bar meter similar to 8's, give you a beat and Eddie arrows to give you the best path's through the game, and then they also give you help at certain points in the game. But unlike the PS2 version there is no remix music when you turn this mode on.
There is also an easy mode that makes fighting the bosses a lot easier because they now take a lot more damage. But if you think that it will lighten up the real challenge like the disappearing, reappearing platforms then your wrong, there still there to frustrate the heck out of you. If these are turned off then it's just like you played in the day of the NES, minus the fact that if you press the Y button you can now do a turbo fire move. It's not really cheating because I have a turbo controller for my NES and the fact that they now implanted it with just pressing the Y button it's a lot more handier.
Also the games now include a save file, this includes the original Mega Man which didn't have any way to save your progress. 2-7 have the save file but they still let you use the passwords if you still want to use them for some crazy reason. And 8 let's you save of course but it's now only one file per memory card, I guess you just can't win them all.
Extras.
The extras in this pack aren't that bad, whenever you beat a game an extra is unlock. This goes from extra sound tracks, to the two arcade games, and a game cube exclusive of a G4 Icons review. This review talks to Iwata, game critics, and game magazine writers and is a complete if comprehensive history of Mega Man in 22 minutes it's definitely something worth looking into.
Control problems?
Now a few reviews I have seen have completely condemn this game for having bad controls and suggested the PS2 version. This all goes the fact that they reversed the jumping and shooting buttons, B is now to jump, and A is to shoot regular shots. It's not that big of a deal and you get used to the control changes in about 20 minutes of playing it. The controls are all spot on perfect besides that, and once you get to thinking about it the reason why no one has complain about the PS2 controls is that these games have never been done on a Playstation controller. So no one of course is going to be complaining when the X button is used to jump.
Game Links.
Some links to all the Mega Man games, and the list from best to worst in my opinion.
Mega Man 3. Forget 2 the 3rd one was the best, it introduced Rush, and Protoman. It also gave a chance to fight all the bosses in Mega Man 2.
.Mega Man 6 came out during the NES dying breath and was so overlooked that Nintendo had to publish it, if you missed it the first time this is the best time to try it.
Mega Man: the original was extremely basic, but still extremely tough and fun to play. And now you can play it without looking at the bad box art.
Mega Man 5: Another over looked game the SNES was in full swing and 4 wasn't the greatest. If you have overlooked this one you should go and try it.
Mega Man 8:. So the sound sucks in the anniversary collection but this is still a solid action game and it's the first time Nintendo fan boys will be able to play this.
Mega Man 7 Bulky graphics in this game make this game seem laughable and does lower it a bit. But it's still a fun shooter
Mega Man 2: Well this game is defiantly the most overrated in the series. The problem comes with the fact that you can get stuck, not lost but stuck because whenever you run out weapon energy you can find yourself not being able to get over obstacles.
Mega Man 4: The worst game in the collection, not that it's bad it's just that there was nothing much new, and the stage design wasn't the most engaging. It's still a good game though.
Final Recommendation.
This is a great collection of games and it's cheap for being only 30 dollars. The GCN version is aiming more for classic and old school gamers, while the PS2 version seems to be aimed more for modern day Mega Man gamers who might be interested in where the series started. The GCN contains a G4 icons show that is unlock able that can't be missed by any old school fan of Mega Man.
