Classic Mega Man reborn in Mega Man Anniversary.

Pros A chance to play the older Mega man games.
Cons Lack of updated graphics, and Mega man only shoots in one direction forward.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you want to relive classic Mega Man buy Mega Man anniversary. The lack of updated graphics may disappoint some people.
Yes our ever-popular blue robot-fighting friend, with a laser cannon for his right arm has returned once more.Eight Mega Man games plus two unlockable games, are on this miniature Gamecube CD. These are Mega man 1-8 through eight. If you've missed the older games but wanted updated graphics, unfortunately you'll have some bad news. Does the direct opposite oaf the last sentence apply to the reader? If so then you are in luck.

The graphics are not updated. Yes in Mega man 4(originally released for the Nintendo 8 bit system) he still has somewhat of a blocky appearance, and two black dots for eyes and a slit for a mouth. The chest is light blue, with no appearance of armor. Yes the chest is just plain light blue. The area from the fingertip to about the forearm is dark blue. This is how Mega Man looked in the late eighties early nineties a white face, and different shades of blue to represent the different portions of his robot suit.

Other examples of graphics, a mountain in Mega Man 4 may be only two colors and have little shadowing. A background piece of machinery may fit the same description. I've even seen a machine one-color dark blue. This piece of machinery is in Dustman's level. Laser shots consists of little white balls. Some of the explosions are just small white circles that appear, and then disappear. An explosion will not sound quite like an explosion. Swimming through water may not actually sound like hands and feet, pushing a body through water. The sounds are more computers generated than sounding like an actual action. Mega Man will run on sand but no dust will appear from his feet hitting the ground. This is a brief description of what the graphics and sounds are like in Mega Man six, five, four, three, two and one. The six aforementioned games were released on Nintendo's eight-bit system. Seven was released on later system.

Since renting "Mega Man Anniversary" I have played games one through seven. Along with Mega Man eight, which I played on the Sega Saturn. My main emphasis currently is on parts five and four. Being that this is a rental, the possibility exists, that not all eight games will be covered in my review. However if this does occur, I will try to cover all eight games in a future revised version of this review. What I like and dislike about each game will be discussed. Followed by a description of the story, enemy encounters, gameplay and other topics.

Mega man IV
The fourth installment of the popular video game series revolves around a jealous man named Mr. Cossack. So just what is he jealous about? Mr. Cossack hates how Dr.Light is hailed as a genius world wide for his robot creations. Mr. Cossack's creations have been only ignored. To seek world fame, he sends eight of his strongest robots from Siberia to crush Mega Man.

This edition as well as many other Mega Man games is viewed from a sidescroller viewpoint. Sidescroller means everything is viewed strictly from the side, and you cannot turn three hundred and sixty degrees around. Everything appears as if it is to the left and in front of the character you control. The only directions the player can move are forward, backward, up and down. Along with jumps which are in the aforementioned directions.

Eight enemy robots must be battled like in Mega Man parts two and three. The first mega Man had six robots. All eight of these robots must be fought in eight stages before facing the final villain. Each robot has a different weapon and fighting style.

Toad Man His stage contains robotic rats, flying penguin like birds that attack, followed by smaller birds of the same kind, a small character with an orange helmet, and large eyes, who parachutes out of the sky, he shoots our blue friend. A large snail robot that attacks with bombs even his eyes. Yes the eyes temporarily detach from the head in an attempt to strike Mega Man. Parts of this stage have heavy rain making immovability more present. When finally reaching Toad man you'll find that he likes to jump around for a while. The attack Toad Man does other than trying to land on the player, is that he can send forth a powerful rainstorm. Toad Man is green, and yellow, the area of his chest; belly and head are shaped like that of a toad. His eyes are cartoon like, with white circles and two black dots.

Defeat him and earn an up grade listed as Toad. The Toad upgrade allows a device to be thrown into the air, which releases the same rainstorm Toad Man used. This weapon can be very useful against certain enemies, particularly larger enemies. Another upgrade is given to Rush the dog. This upgrade is listed as R. Marine. Rush transforms into an aquatic vehicle. Rush I did not mention earlier is Mega Man ally. Rush equips a coil that Mega Man can bounce on to reach difficult locations. Rush can also other interesting upgrades such as the ability to fly.

To make your laser cannon produce stronger shots hold down the a button, then release(mega buster fires powerful blast). The longer this button is held down the more intense Mega Man will glow. This powerful blast applies to games four through eight. X button is used for sliding in M.M. three through six.Down and b slides for M.M. parts seven and eight. Some of the older games on this cd do not use the slide ,and mega buster blast function. Mega Man 1 is one of those games. Pressing the b button does jumping. To view both Mega Man and Rush add ons (upgrades) press the z button. Another way to activate the different earned abilities is to press the top right and left buttons. For rapid fire in Mega Man's 1-6 is press the y button.

Pharaoh Man I found him to be one of the easier robots to defeat. Using the right weapon just might stop him dead in his tracks.:) Pharaoh Man's stage consists of quicksand. Mummies coming out of doors, which appear then, disappear. These mummies throw their heads at the blue man. Black bats fly at you very slowly. The bats are seen as little black balls, when not in attack mode. A balloon is earned on Pharaoh Man's stage. The Balloon also makes difficult heights easier to reach. Pharaoh man attacks with a glowing ball. I don't believe this glowing ball is more powerful than Mega Man's charged blast. This glowing ball can however be thrown in different directions, once in Mega Man's possession. Pharaoh Man's is black and yellow. His head looks like a cartoon version of the faces seen on many ancient Egyptian tombs.

Skull Man Skull Man resembles a skeleton form on the face, stomach, and chest. A force shield of skeletons will circle Skull Man's body. Skull man shoots white dots like Mega Man. His stage consists of fossils, robots that throw wrenches, green caterpillar robots, black bats and green cannons. Platforms that must be jump from with the right timing. Skull man is a white, gray black and red. Defeat Skull man and earn his skull force shield. This force shield can hurt the enemy as well. There are two drawbacks while equipped with the skull force shield, the laser cannon cannot be used and the player must be very close to the enemy, to do damage with the skull force shield.

Mega Man V A new villain emerges in the fifth installment named Protoman. As of now, I know very little about Protoman, except that he is supposed to be Mega Man's brother. Our blue hero is sent to stop the chaos of Protoman. First the blue one must get past, eight robots once again. So far I have defeated two robots, and challenged but failed against two more.

Gravity Man This robots level has many areas, where you will see up and down arrows. A down arrow means the gravitation pull will force the player downward. An up arrow means the direct opposite. There are a good number of small green cannons coming out of the floor. Glass containers also exist on this level that have red dots falling from them. Gravity Man's chest, and stomach is shaped like a V, he is mostly red, and has a cannon for an arm like Mega Man. The face of this foe is white and has large circular white eyes with clack dots.
This foe is tough. Not only will Mega Man be manipulated with gravitational pulls (upward and downward) but he will be shot at and landed on as well. I 'have used the gravitational hold upgrade on Gyro Man. My hopes were that I would be able to manipulate him with gravity as well. Unfortunately this was not the case. Gyro Man did loose endurance, but not as much as I would have liked him to loose.

Gyro Man Expect to see platforms, that fall apart while being both walked on and ran on. Other platforms have screws attached to the bottom and move downward, towards our hero. Small blimp like objects with propellers on the back flying both high and low. What makes Gyro Man difficult is the fact that clouds are directly above this robot. This fierce enemy takes full advantage of the clouds for hiding. While in the clouds and on ground Gyro Man throws a helicopter like blade. Gyro Man is a bright green color, has a circular head, and the helicopter blade is on his back. The background here is white clouds with light blue skies. Defeat Gyro Man ,and small helicopter like blades become part of your arsenal.

Stone Man Stone Man is not only made of yellowish stone but can crumble to stone, and rebuild himself back to his original form. This happens when Stone Man attempts to jump on Mega Man and fails. The mega buster (laser cannon) can only land shots on Stone man when firing at the right time. Stones move in a circular pattern around the foes body and spread out. Little men with orange work helmets, large eyes and shoes will attack with a three shots at a time. In other words three of the white balls will come in your direction, then these little men will hide under their helmets. After shooting these little men they split into three smaller men. Small robotic mice moving left to right, right to left also attack. Robotic insects with light pink wings attack our blue friend with shots.

Charge Man You'll be on top of ,and inside a train shooting robotic chickens their eggs ,and the little men with the orange work hats but now they ride small trains. The robotic mice are present once more. There are also small orange robots with shields attached to their bodies with bars. These shields move over their heads ,and over bodies in an forward-downward upward-downward swinging motion. The orange robots fire one shot at a time. When you make it to Charge Man ,he has a charger pack on his back that must charge before he can attack.Whatever he fires off from that pack goes into the air and lands in three separate places.Expect to see a large red ,and black robot firing missiles before entering the area where you'll be challenged by Charge Man. Charge Man has a circular head, large white eyes with two black dots, a somewhat slouched appearance, and is orange. His chest looks like it is supposed to be the front portion of a train.Being that this is from the eight bit era, it is a little hard to know whether or not it is the front portion of a train.

Bad News my Interactive memory card's file of "Mega Man Anniversary" had been corrupted. As a result of this catastrophe the file had to be deleted.:( Eight robots defeated between two games, now no more. So what I will do is writing a little more, then publish my review. Before Saturday the 17th, the game's return date, I will try to include two more Mega Man games. Each game coming with descriptions of at least three stages.

Mega Man VI Involves a new mad scientist named Mr. X. Mr. X who sponsors a Robot Tournament held in the year 20XX. As the lights for the tournament dim Mr. X announces his true intentions of conquering the world.
I am just now starting this game. One thing I have notice is that each opponents height, weight, defense, mobility and weapon are listed when his level is selected out of the other eight robots levels.

Knight Man This level appears to be in a castle. Here you'll see cylinder shaped structures made of white stone. Track vehicles with two screw bits attack Mega Man. Little men in caskets with green cloth wrapped around their heads pop and shoot. Light green platforms with spikes are lowered by chains. Green cannons with shields are also present. Knight Man is a knight in black and purple armor equipped with a shield and a spiked chainball as his weapon. Defeat him and the spiked chainball weapon becomes available for usage.

Wind Man This boss uses fans to pull you in close, and throws two small fans at Mega Man. On his stage you will battle robotic pandas, Cannons with propellers attached to the back. Fans will blow Mega man upward. defeat Wind Man and Mega Man earns an upgrade where he will shoot a small tornado like whirlwind.

Blizzard Man This robot skis attacks with snow and rolls into a ball trying to pounce on Mega Man. On this stage you'll deal with robotic walruses, robotic squids, men wearing green helmets operating cannons, timebombs set for three seconds, the seconds begin ticking away upon contact. There is also a nice looking large pink ,and orange submarine rising above and below water, but the whole submarine is never entirely under water. This is the main spot for the men operating the cannons. I honestly believe this is even the only area on the whole stage the cannon operators are seen. Be ready for a couple of timebombs before entering to do battle with Blizzard Man.

thoughts Though the boss's at the end of each stage are considered robots. I cannot help but wonder, if they are really part human. Many of the robots appear to be wearing helmets, and have human like eyes. Their form is also much like that of a human. Two arms two legs. The area from the kneecap to the toe is appears to be made of manipulated ovals, and has somewhat of a boot like appearance to me. This may hint that they are like Mega Man. He was once human named Rock and made into robot. Perhaps they are humans with some modified circuitry added wearing robotic suits. Even though this is a great video game series, it has weaknesses. I would have liked Mega Man to be able to shoot in more than just one direction. Being able shoot at only what is in front of your face, can be a real downer.

I never really thought about this as a grade schooler but it would be nice. during that time period I had played Mega Man one, two, and three.Example take Contra, here your soldier can shoot in many directions and that factor adds to the fun. Even if Mega could not shoot in as many directions as Bill from Contra, this would add to the fun factor.

I feel some continuation points are too delayed. Many enemies may be beat you'll die, and have to go back to the very begining of the stage. There are times when you'll jump, press rapid fire ,and only one shot is fired instead of three. Three shots are supposed to come out of the arm mounted cannon, when using rapid fire.

Mega Man is a great video Game series. Despite these eight titles all being side scrollers, there are versions were the blue hero could move three hundred and sixty degrees. I like being able to blast away so many different kinds of villains it's very fun. I also like being able to earn new weapons upgrades and use them against enemies of many different shapes and sizes. The cartoon appearance of the allies and foes is very appealing to me. This appearance is one I can see both young and old people liking very much. This look is not too plain or too serious. Also I believe cartoons are becoming more popular with people of more age groups than in the past. This is another factor that I think will cause people to like the cartoon graphics.

Normally I include a rating scale. However since I want to add more games to this review, the rating factors will have to wait. A rating scale should be by Sunday at the latest. In the future, the rating factors may change; change as more information becomes available. Personally, I cannot see this game ever going below an eight on a scale of one to ten.
