A Bigger, Badder and Cleaner Dust Buster

Pros Powerful, 2 speeds, much improved filter system
Cons May be a little heavy for some
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Everything a cordless handheld vacuum should be at a very reasonable price.
Background
Several weeks ago we began a total makeover of our pathetically cluttered garage. And, since we were going to start with fresh paint all around, everything on the walls had to be removed.

Carefully unscrewing the mounting plate of our vintage Dust Buster DB200 Hand Held Vacuum, I brought the plate and the vacuum into the kitchen and unceremoniously tossed them both into the garbage. Wow! That felt great.

I never liked that vacuum. From the day we bought it I found it to be woefully under-powered and extremely messy to empty. The cloth filter that fit into the nose of the vacuum would at times become so gross that it would test my gag reflex.

The Search
So, it was off to Lowe's to find a replacement. Although I'd like to think that I was approaching this selection with an open mind I have to admit that I was prepared to dislike anything that said Dust Buster.

I looked at cordless handheld models from Dirt Devil, Euro-Pro, Bissell but none of them seemed to resonate with me. There was always something about their design that put me off. I turned my attention to the bright stylish box that proclaimed Black & Decker Dust Buster CHV1400 Bagless Handheld Cyclonic Vacuum. I looked it over very carefully with a wary eye.

Holding the demo model in my hands it felt comfortable. The profile of the vacuum made sense to me, but then so did the profile of my original Dust Buster. Aside from the somewhat familiar profile though, this model appeared to be everything that my old DB200 wasn't.

Being a 14.4Volt model, it was obvious that this baby was bringing plenty of power to the party. But what was most impressive was the Air Watt rating.

Air Watts?
What exactly is an air watt? Well actually I have no idea how it is computed, but it is a relative measure of the suction power developed at the vacuum nozzle. In essence it tells you just how powerful the suction created is. My old DB200 Dust Buster had a rating of just 3.2 air watts. This new Dust Buster had a rating of 25! I was being told that this new model had 7 – 8 times the suction of my discarded unit. That got my attention.
Filters
The filtration system got my attention next. As I noted earlier the old filter bag design of early Dust Busters disgusted me. It was filthy and over time became so encrusted with lint and miscellaneous crud that it further weakened the power of the unit. The Black & Decker Dust Buster CHV1400 Bagless Handheld Cyclonic Vacuum features a multi-stage filtration system that begins with a paper (washable) filter protected by a perforated plastic filter shield that prevents all but the finest particles from reaching the paper filter. Additionally this model has what it calls an "Easy Clean Wheel" that when turned 180 degrees or more cleans the filter and restores up to 80 per cent of the power of the unit.

Sustained Power
In use, it doesn't really matter how powerful the suction of a cordless vacuum is if it doesn't last long enough. My old DB200 could operate for between 5 – 6 minutes before needing a recharge. The Black & Decker Dust Buster CHV1400 Bagless Handheld Cyclonic Vacuum will operate at peak power for 15 minutes, more than enough for most household usage.

Onboard Storage
This updated Dust Buster also has onboard storage of its crevice tool and brush attachment. Having had to search every drawer in the kitchen for the crevice tool of our original Dust Buster, I can say that this is a smart design.

Mounting & Charging
Like most handheld cordless vacuums this model comes with a storage/charging base that attaches to the wall with two screws that are included. I found that it took less than 5 minutes to install the base.

Before using the vacuum for the first time it is recommended that the NiCad battery be charged for a full 16 hours. I always seem to have a hard time complying with these initial charge instructions, don't you? But, in this case I did allow for a full 16 hour charge.

My Experience
In the few weeks that we've owned and used this new vacuum I have to say that I've been impressed with its performance. The two speed motor develops such a powerful suction that when set on high I accidentally sucked some of the painters tape off the wall while I was vacuuming up some spackle dust.

At between 2 & 3 pounds the unit feels substantial and comfortable in my hand, but I can see where it may be just a tad heavy for some.

All-in-all, I find the Black & Decker Dust Buster CHV1400 Bagless Handheld Cyclonic Vacuum to be a superior product and highly recommend it.

It is currently available at Lowes for a very reasonable $34.99. Buy one. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Regards,

Rudi
