Burt's Bees Hand Salve - Farmer's Friend Huh?
Pros
effective, good ingredients
Cons
thick, hard for daily use
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
The Bottom Line is this salve is effective, but thick and not workable for daily use.
Our family uses a lot of various Burt's Bees products because they are more natural products to use and because a lot of them have worked effectively for us. Burt's Bees Hand Salve was a product my husband had actually asked for last Christmas - and so it showed up in his stocking.
Product
Though only 3 ounces in size, it's a large round tin. It's designed in typical "yellow" Burt's Bees logo with honeycomb background. It features a "burly" name wearing a cap and states it is a "farmer's friend." The product inside is thick and looks like pressed Vaseline. It smells sort of medicinal and minty - sort of like Vapor Rub. Since it was labeled as a "salve" my husband figured it would be really effective on his dry, chapped, and some times bleeding hands.
From the company:
"Our all-purpose protective hand salve is made with botanical oils, herbs and beeswax, specially formulated to deeply penetrate dry, chapped hands and other areas that need extra moisturizing. For best results, gently massage the salve into skin daily before and after gardening and other outdoor activities."
Man's Friend
My husband swears by this stuff. He does admit that it is thick and gooey and he only uses it at night before going to bed. Since he works in the medical profession, he washes his hands frequently. Every winter time his hands get so dry that they actually crack and bleed, and so he's been looking for a hand product that fixed his skin quickly and effectively. I have given him various hand creams that I've used over the years and he hasn't loved them for one reason or another. Since purchasing this product it is the only thing he will use on his hands. He says he cannot be without it.
Woman's Friend
I admit that part of what turns me off about this product is the smell. It smells medicinal and like something I should use when I am sick. But beyond that it is really thick and gooey. It is a product that I only use infrequently, when nothing else will work. And even then I complain about it the whole time. It feels like smearing Vaseline all over my hands. It never absorbs or rubs in. I find myself having to wipe most of it off with a baby wipe, as I cannot touch anything for hours and hours after applying this. Except for wearing gloves or socks over my hands (maybe at night?), I never use this stuff anymore as it's just not practical with teaching and two children in diapers, I can't just sit around with my hands still waiting for the product to do its magic.
Verdict
So we both agree that Burt's Bees Hand Salve can be very effective, and one tin certainly lasts a very long time. Ours looks like some product has been scooped out in the middle, but most of the stuff is still there as it takes just a small amount to coat our hands. My husband prefers this product more than I do - it's the only hand cream he will use while I prefer just about anything else.
Ingredients: Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Comfrey Root Extract, Rosemary Oil, Leaf Extract, Lavandin Oil, Flower Extract, Eucalyptus Oil
