Burt's Bees Wonderfully Natural & Pepperminty Lip Balm

Pros Smooth, light, silky, minty, moisturizing
Cons Unexpected (but enjoyable) peppermint scent/flavor
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a great lip balm, both natural and refreshing. I like the feel and moisturizing properties of this product.
I didn't actually purchase Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm (or simply, Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm!). Instead, it came in a starter kit with a bunch of other items. I use lip balm when I remember to, and more so in the winter when its particularly dry. I like to keep a balm in my jacket pocket and some at home. I keep them in the car, but only in the winter, because warmer weather will melt the balm, which wastes the product and makes a mess.

Packaging

I have the tube, although this product is also available in a tin. The tube holds .15 oz, and the tin, .3 oz. However, both are the same price. The plastic used for the tube contains 50% post-industrial recycled plastic. I'm surprised that the tin doesn't have any recycled material, but I am thrilled that Burt's Bees often uses recycled materials.

More Recycling Info

From Burt's Bees website, FAQ's section:

" 12. Do you still honor the lip balm tube recycling program?
Yes, but we are phasing it out. We started the program to promote recycling and reduce waste. However, the program has actually in many cases caused more waste when empty lip balm tubes are returned to us in excessive bubble wrap and tape. We will honor the program until all lip balms tubes with labeling promoting the program are out of circulation. In the meantime, please return your empty Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm tubes in a paper envelope with the written words HAND CANCEL, and mail to:
Lip Balm Recycle Program
Burt's Bees, Inc.
P. O. Box 13489
Durham, NC 27709"

Neat idea… it would be nice if maybe they had a recycling bin attached to their in-store displays. I personally can't really afford to be sending lip balms back to the company, but I do like to do my part for the environment.

Scent & Taste

The first thing you'll notice about this balm is the peppermint scent. The container doesn't say anything about the "flavor" or scent, which I'm not too happy about. If I were buying this in the store, I would be inclined to think this was a plain lip balm, unless I read the ingredients and saw the peppermint oil.

I can't say I'm much for tasting lip balms, but once in a while I detect a little bit of a peppermint taste.

Results & Performance

When I applied the balm, I immediately noticed the scent of the product. And although it wasn't immediate, I felt a minty tingle on my lips. Now, my lips never get so bad that they are cracked or bleeding, so I felt the peppermint on semi-dry lips.

The texture is nice and smooth, not waxy. It's more of a glossy, slick feel, rather than a coating. There are some lip balms that I feel like I need to wipe them off, but this one is very nice.

I wouldn't say that the Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm burns, but I can definitely tell that there's peppermint on my lips. It's not uncomfortable, although I wonder if it would be if my lips were actually cracked or bleeding.

Although I don't have severe dryness problems, this balm is very soothing and moisturizing. It also adds a nice touch of gloss to your lips. I really like the minty and refreshing feeling, whether my lips are dry or not!

Ingredients & Animal Testing

Tube: Beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower oil, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (vitamin E), lanolin, peppermint oil, comfrey root extract, rosemary extract.

Tin: Coconut oil, beeswax, sweet almond oil, peppermint oil, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (vitamin E), lanolin, comfrey root extract, rosemary extract.

The great thing about this product is that its 95.29% Natural. This is a quality that really seals the deal when I'm purchasing Burt's Bees products. I love being able to read the ingredients and actually be able to recognize the names listed, instead of chemicals that I can't even pronounce.

There is NO animal testing involved with Burt's Bees products. This is the kind of company that I like to support!

Price & Where to Find

I have plenty of health food stores around me, which were probably the first places I saw Burt's Bees products. Now, I'm seeing their products become more and more popular, and I like the convenience of finding them in supermarkets.

The Burt's Bees website lists this product at $2.50. I didn't buy it as an individual item, but this is a reasonable price.

Overall

I don't normally buy lip balms, because they are one of those things I have so many of. They pile up as stocking stuffers and as other gifts, so I have a bit of a collection. I don't experience too many problems where I am in dire need of a lip balm.

I definitely like Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm, and it's probably the most natural lip balm that I have used, as well as being from a cruelty free company. I like the peppermint scent, as well as the fresh feel.

Overall, I'd have to say that I enjoy the lip balm, and even more because of its natural content. I was tempted to remove a star because of the lack of labeling on this balm that says nothing about the peppermint scent, but this is such a great product. The labeling doesn't actually detract from the balm itself, so 5 stars it is.
