Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm: Like a Rock
Pros
Moisturizing, lasts, works well under lipstick, good value
Cons
Too minty, no SPF, hard to apply!
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Too hard and waxy, but I like it otherwise. Stick may be a better choice than tin form.
I bought this lip balm recently when I ran out of my Neutrogena Lip Moisturizer SPF 15. I had liked the Neutrogena, but was unhappy with the fact that it would often alter the color and texture of my lipsticks when I wore it underneath. My favorite lip balm of all time is Prada, but I can't really afford that right now, so I decided to try out something new.
SCENT
To begin with, one thing I really do not like about this product is the scent. I am not normally bothered by the scent of products (you have only to read some of my other reviews to see this.) However, this is just WAY too much mint for me. I prefer my lip balm unscented.
SPF
None, which is not a good thing. I knew it didn't have any when I bought it, but I still wish it did.
TEXTURE/APPLICATION
My main complaint with this product is that it is hard as a rock!! When I first opened the tin and dipped my finger in I couldn't believe how hard it was to actually get a decent amount of it onto my lips. I have to swirl my finger around and keep applying it a LOT of times before I feel like my lips are covered. My newest method is to just rub the tin directly over my mouth. I know it sounds absolutely insane, but that's the only way I can get enough! I really should have bought the stick, as that seems like it would be much easier. But if this stuff can't be applied from a tin, then they shouldn't sell it in a darn tin!
However, one good thing is that the product is indeed very moisturizing while on. It also is very well suited to wear under lipstick and will not change the color or texture of your lipstick at all if you wear it this way. This is its main advantage, for me.
STAYING POWER
This stuff keeps moisturizing for a LONG time! I have it on my lips right now under my MAC Brave lipstick, and I can still feel it after having applied it 4 hours ago. It also hasn't altered the staying power of my lipstick -- it doesn't make lipstick slide off any faster than usual when you eat, kiss, or drink, which is a pretty cool thing.
PRICE/VALUE
This is an excellent amount of product for the money. I am sure it will last forever, especially considering how darn hard it is! But that assumes I won't get frustrated and move onto something else first!
BOTTOM LINE
This lip balm is very moisturizing and soothing (and cheap!), but I don't like the fact that it is so hard to apply.
UPDATE: A couple of days after I wrote this, I finally tried out using a lip brush to apply the balm. That worked GREAT. Finally, I got on a decent amount of the balm. I really am starting to like it a lot better now. However, after some thought, I have decided not to increase the number of stars I am giving this product, because I still find it very irritating that I have to carry a lip brush around just to get this stuff on. I will purchase the stick form next time, and perhaps revisit this review again if that application proves easier.
