A Perfect Bit of Burberry Brit
Pros
Great for every day, pleasant, clean, refined. Not too strong, not too soft, long lasting.
Cons
Be careful, one spray too many and it's easy to overdo it.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A great all-around, every-day cologne for the male professional. Not too strong, not too soft, and lasts a long time.
Before I met my wife, cologne to me was just what some men bathed in to remind you of their greatness. Sure, I had some cheap stuff myself that I used on special occasions (it was so cheap, it didn't remind anyone of my greatness), but beyond a strong underarm deodorant, I really wasn't into it. Enter The Missus. She began buying me cologne when we dated. The first bottle she bought I didn't like, but as she got to know me better, her cologne choices for me improved. I actually began to realize that if the cologne is not just a smell you like; if it also compliments your personality and matches a purpose, it can be quite nice in moderation. With my wife's most recent cologne selection, Burberry Brit for Men, it definitely was a great choice for me. It compliments my personality, and I think it's a great every-day cologne for most guys.
Scents are Day and Night
While I've been learning that there are many types of scents, perfumes, and colognes for all kinds of people and occasions, I basically have just two categories for my cologne preferences: day, and night. My night cologne's are strong, sharp scents that can be noticed while out for a night on the town. They're strong enough to cut the unpleasantness of a stinky bar or club, or the unpleasantness of me, after the bar or club.
Conversely, my day colognes are more reserved, less striking, less in-your-face. The goal is for the scent to compliment me while in the office, without causing my office colleagues to request that I take frequent smoke breaks outside, even though I don't smoke.
Brit by Day
Burberry Brit for Men is a cologne in the 'Eau de Toilette' class of perfumes, meaning that it's about a medium concentration strength. (Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-20% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds). That's not to say that it's weak. It's actually stronger than my Aqua di Gio by probably double the concentration level. But it's weaker than full 'Eau de Parfum' or perfume extract (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfume#Describing_a_perfume).
In general, to me, the scent is kind a refined smell that isn't too harsh or too weak. However, trying to describe what it actually smells like, is harder than describing what the scent does not smell like, so I'll do that first. It isn't flowery, and it isn't especially musky, although there's perhaps a slight hint of that. There's also no discernible citrus smell to me, and it's not like any kind of aftershave lotion or deodorant so it's not a typical sport-type scent.
What the aroma doesn't smell like, but what it reminds me of is something a refined man would wear after playing a non-contact sport, like tennis, or croquet. It's a bit of a 'fresh' smell that is youthful, but isn't adolescent. There might even be a touch of cinnamon; however it certainly doesn't smell like a cinnamon stick in any way. That's just the closest thing I can think of with words to describe it. It's just nice, and very pleasant if used in the proper quantity.
Use
In moderation, with 1 or 2 sprays (1 to the wrist, and 1 to the torso) the smell is very pleasant and reserved. However unlike with some other day colognes, one extra spray too much can mean the difference between perfect and annoying. With too many sprays, lets say more than 3, the cologne has the potential to be overpowering. Plus, it stays with you so long that you'll swear it's following you (it is). With just the right number of sprays however, the lingering aroma is a welcome reminder after a long day that it's still there, and it's still working.
The cologne does last a long time. Even after 8 hours there is a noticeable residual smell. After 10 hours it becomes fainter, and after 12 hours it's mostly gone, but still detectable. Of course that's me smelling it on myself. It may be different for other people, but wife does say she can faintly smell it at the end of a long day. Again, this makes it the perfect day cologne.
Package and Contents
The bottle of Burberry Brit for Men I have is a rectangular smoky-gray glass bottle, with a plastic square cap that fits over the spray pump. The bottle is fully covered in a black and gray plaid design.
The bottle holds 50 ml, or 1.7 Fl. Oz. of cologne, and is "Made in France"
Ingredients
Sometimes people have allergic reactions to certain ingredients in perfumes, which is why I feel it's important to list those ingredients in reviews. While the actual fragrance formula, like most perfumes, is not listed, the primary ingredients are as follows:
-Denatured Alcohol (SD-Alcohol 39-C)
-Water
-Parfume (fragrance)
-Linalool
-Limonene
-Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate
-Butyl Methoxydibenxoylamethane
-Citronellol
-Alpha-Isomethyl Ionene
-Ethylhexyl Salicylate
-Geroniol
-Coumarin
-Citral
-CI 60730 (Ext. Violet 2)
-CI 42090 (Blue 1)
Price
This cologne was a present to me, but the average price online from what I can find ranges from $27 to $55 per bottle in the 1.7 Fl Oz. quantity. This puts it on par with most of my 'day' colognes of the same general purpose.
Conclusion
Writing an Internet review of a product which involves the senses other than the visual or audible, and isn't something that 'does stuff', may seem a bit pointless. However, if you're shopping for a cologne for yourself, or for a significant other, with the vast array of colognes and fragrances out there, having an idea of what you want makes the decision easier. With the range of options just at your local department store these days, it could take you hours to find something right, assuming your nose lasts past the first few samples. (Try roasted coffee beans, they 'reset' your nose).
That said, this review is intended to just point you towards a cologne that I think you might like. Of course tastes vary, but make sure this stuff is on the on your list. It's odd describing a scent with adjectives, but if you (or your man) is confident but not arrogant (never!), is gentlemanly and likes people to take notice when he walks into a room (and not flee), then this cologne is for you. (Or perhaps it's for him, from you.) Either way, he can't go wrong with a little bit of Burberry Brit.
