Brother XL-3500 - Great machine

Pros Light weight and easy to use. Not too expensive either.
Cons Machine tends to jump when sewing at high speeds because of it's light weight.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I couldn't ask for a better machine for the money. It has been a very dependable sewing machine.
I recently purchased this machine to replace one I lost in a fire. I have to admit that I am very picky about my sewing machines. I have bought and donated several in my search for one that would do what I needed it to. I sew anything from clothing to quilts and anything in between. I sew mostly for my family, however, I do some sewing for profit. It was very important to me to have a machine that would cover all the bases that I need.
I can't emphasize the fact that I love this sewing machine enough! It is light weight so I can take it to classes, yet sturdy enough to sew through thick fabrics. I was very surprised at what this machine can handle. I have sewn light weight fabrics such as silks, satin and cotton to heavier weight corduroy. I have also used it for machine quilting. It goes through the top, batting and backing with no problems. Not even a missed stitch.
Changing thread and stitches is a breeze. For the stitches, all it takes is the touch of a button. Threading the machine and changing the bobbin only a moment of time. It is so easy to use that I have taught several classes to younger children who mastered this machine in minutes.
The only problem that I have had is when sewing heavy weight fabrics, it needs a little bit of help to cross over the seams. (Usually 4 layers of fabric.) Since I know that this is an issue, I simply help the feed dogs pull the fabric though at a slow speed. It really hasn't been a big problem, just something to pay attention to.
I have always sewn on larger, heavier, and usually commercial machines, but this one has proved that it can hold its own!
