Great starter embroidery machine
Pros
Easy set-up, easy to use. Great warranty (25 year).
Cons
Would be nice to be able to use larger hoops.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this product because of it's ease of use for the beginner & versatility for the more experienced sewers.
I love my SE-270D! The cartridge is not hard to use once you do it a couple of times. It does not care a lot for the shiny threads (rayon)..but with a bit of "coaxing" (mumbling under the breath works)...it complies nicely.
It does make you want a larger hoop (Brother probably knows this means a more expensive setup on Christmas lists!).
Do use the recommended stabilizer...it does not like some of the heavier ones.
I have never had a computerized machine, this is my first, and probably the last for a long while. I love the way the stitches come out..very neat, easy to adjust & many different combos to choose from.
You do need the reader if you want to import any extra stitches/designs. I got one on EBay for under 100.00 (shipping included!).
I use the machine mainly for sewing quilts. Have practiced some quilting designs on it (I have a long-arm, so this was just to try the machine) & it worked well. I have done many embroidery designs...love that aspect! Great for crazy quilting.
If you are looking for a machine that will last & can get you into embroidery without breaking the bank, this one is it!
