The Bottom Line:
If you want to consolidate fax, copier, printer, etc, this is it. Network ready and looks great. Print quality is subpar. Home office? Yes. Photo printing? No.
I purchased this Brother MFC unit because we use larger Brother MFC at my main job, which we print documents in the six digits per month. I was fairly impressed by the quality of these units at work so I was under the impression that the small/home models would be similar to the ones we use at work. I was wrong of course. You get what you pay for. I only paid $120 for the unit, which is a great value for what you get with all the features.
My favorite feature is the network capability! I was excited to see all the features like print, scan, fax, media card hub, etc. I really wanted to free up some real estate on my desk, and it replaced my copier, fax, PC-card reader, and printer, but NOT MY Scanner. I use a Visioneer scanner which is really great. The Brother 420CN will not scan three dimensional objects. It will only scan flat documents with the top bed closed. My home business requires a lot of 3D object scanning, so I was disappointed when it could not do that task.
I swore to myself that I would never buy a inkjet printer again after all the hell HP and Epson put me through, with the poor print quality, expensive cartridges, paper jamming, etc... So I was praying that Brother would make me a believer again. WRONG... This unit is just as bad as HP and Epson when it comes to ink. Paper jams are frequent, photo quality is poor on regular paper, and for some reason this unit shoots the paper out at amazing speed on to the floor. Its kind of fun to watch at first, but gets irritating when you walk way from a 30 page document and come back and find them all on the ground, out of order.
Overall, I do not regret buying this unit. I have consolidated much of my equipment into one unit. I love the fax feature, copy feature, and multimedia card hub feature. There is a multi-page feeder on the top of the unit, which seemed like a great feature at first, but it works horrible also. It is a novelty feature that wears off very fast. Sometimes it picks up multiple pages, so I would not use it for critical documents. The price was just right, actually too good to be true.
