Good bargain for all the features, put weak print quality
Pros
Multifunction capability, network capable, easy to use software, low cost
Cons
Mediocre print quality, high-res scans take FOREVER....
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you need a fax machine that flatbed copies (with an ADF too), scans and color prints, you can't beat this $150 price tag.
I purchased this all-in-one as I identified a need for a fax machine in my home office, and my laser printer (an HP LaserJet 6L which lasted 10 years) was finally dying. I opted for the MFC-420CN mostly due to its networkability which is virtually unheard of in this price range. I read some great reviews about it at cnet.com and decided this was my best bet.
I was pleasantly surprised and sadly disappointed all at once. All the software and the networkability installed correctly the first time! This was a new experience for me having dealt with a few HP all-in-ones at work and the horrors of getting the features of the all-in-ones to install. However... the print quality left quite a bit to be desired - especially after having been told by several salespeople that inkjet printing at this "high resolution" was virtually indistinguishable from older laser printers like my old 6L. How wrong they were. The jetlines are quite obvious in black, and not quite as obvious with color prints. So what does this mean??? I am probably off to buy a low-cost HP laser printer again for printing, but I will happily utilize this unit for the occasional color print, as well as faxing and scanning. The scanning ability is nice, however this scanner is VERY slow at anything higher that 300x300dpi. The 1200x1200dpi scans look nicer, but take about 5-6 minutes per scan. I know that doesn't seem like a long time, but when you are waiting for that image to come up on your screen, it seems like forever.
The bottom line - It's a fax machine with additional capabilities. I would have spent the same $150 on a fax machine that didn't do anything other than page-feed fax, so I am much happier with a flatbed scanner that does all that and more (it does thankfully have an ADF) for the same $150. If you are in need of a fax that you can utilize across the network VERY easily for the occasional other use - look no further, this is your machine.
