paying for expensive ink you don't actually use; scanner doesn't work when ink is low

First, the print quality is sub-par and then, well....the automatic 'cleaning' process gradually empties your ink cartridges (cleaning out your wallet, more like) - EVEN if you've never used your colour cartridges, you'll have to replace them! Ridiculous. AND, if your black runs low, the scanner doesn't work! At all! I mean, come on!
And the web is filled with horror stories about printhead Error 41. Oh joy. I can't wait.
