A great office machine with all the functions I need in my busy life!
Pros
Space-saving and very versatile! "Easy2Use" Interface. Great print quality for an ink-jet printer! .
Cons
Equipment stops printing even when only 1 color is out.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great multi-functional office machine with few flaws! Definitely recommended!
Now this is a great office machine with all the functions I need in my busy life!
I used to have an Epson Stylus Color 880, but I got this piece of equipment because my husband was tired of sending faxes through computer software and wonder if it would actually arrive at it's destination. At the same time I was printing a lot of documents and scanning photos into my computer. It was only smart to get a multi-purpose machine like the Brother Multi-Function Center: MFC-420CN All-In-One Ink-Jet Printer!
Features:
A printer, copier, fax machine, phone, and scanner - all built into one machine and it even has a memory card reader.
Settings/Preferences
I believe that it is easier to modify the print/fax/scan preferences on your computer that having to go through the menu options on the printer itself (by pushing buttons). If you just want to do a quick scan, copy or fax, the button method suffices.
It's just too much button pushing for me when it comes to setting up preferences through the machine itself, though. There are just too many menus and sub-menus without real descriptions of what they will do unless you get out the system manual.
However, the Brother Control Center Software has a nice and simple interface. You can choose from "Scan", "Custom Scan", "Photo Capture", "Copy", "PC-Fax" and "Device Settings" options, and each option has a sub-menu, that allows you custom configurations. I noticed that each of the configurations shows a description of what it will do when you hover over it or click once, double-clicking will get the job done.
For example, you can either scan an image into a specific application, scan and convert into text (great for word processing, just make sure the document you are scanning has legible print), to email (so it can be used as an attachment)or to a file with a chosen file extension. The PC-Fax option lets you set up a fax only address book, view previous received faxes in a separate viewer and lets you change all of your outgoing fax information, name, email address etc by simply using your keyboard to fill in blanks on a form.
Printing
I have no complaint, other than it annoys me that I have to change ink cartridges in the middle of a print project when ever the printer runs out of even just one color. Some other printers at least allow you to continue to print in black and white, if one color is out etc.
Changing the cartridges however is easy: you just lift open the printer cover (kinda like opening and securing the hood of a car) move a small lever by the cartridge you are replacing and pull it out. Then push the new cartridge into the same location until it snaps into place, close the printer cover and that's it. The machine cleans itself right after, and honestly I've never seen a cleaner ink-jet print job, before as well as after the cartridge replacement. (Other printers I used to have had color variations or ink blotches ruin the print before and right after replacement. This one doesn't ever do that!)
Overall
I like this machine as it gives you a lot of customization options when you use the pc-interface and at the same time it's great for the not so technically inclined person that just wants to do a simple scan, copy, print or fax! The Pros definitely outweigh the Cons!
