Pros Nice stitches and features, easy to use, works well on heavy fabrics (use correct needle!)
Cons No user access to upper body, whiney motor.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this for a beginner/intermediate sewer or a back-up machine.
I bought this machine about a week and a half ago after my Singer's bobbin case refused to stay in while sewing. I sew as a side business so I needed one that worked immediately. This Brother is my third machine over about 15 years.

So far so good! The manual is very thorough and easy to follow. I love the fact that I don't have to pull up the bobbin thread before sewing. A good variety of stitches for the average, practical sewer, and some very pretty decorative stitches for those fancier sewers. The stitches are turning out beautifully, I'm not having any issues with tension or loops when I lock stitches by reversing over them, which my Singer had issues with.

The other thing I really liked is that there is a button you can push while lowering the presser foot that will lock the presser foot horizontally - so if you are starting at the edge of a thicker fabric, usually the front of the presser foot will rest on the fabric and the back on the needle plate, so the presser foot is at an angle from front to back. The button allows the foot to go down only to the height of the fabric, which keeps it from catching up on the initial few stitches, and keeps the stitches nice and even! I love this feature, as those first few stitches was one of my biggest challenges while sewing with my Singer!

On the other hand, I didn't like that the user can only clean the bobbin case area, which worries me, since I'm sure lint will build up along the top thread, too, but there is no access to the inside of the upper body. Also, the machine makes a higher pitched whiney noise when run at high speed - I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but since the machine is sewing nicely I'm thinking it is either something I am doing, or completely normal. I may just be used to my heavier Singer. I have not tried heavy fabrics yet, but other reviews I've read on walmart.com seem to indicate this is not the ideal machine for thick and heavy fabrics.

Update 4/2/09:  I've been using this machine 30 hours a week or so since the middle of last September, and it's still going well.  I haven't had any issues that weren't user error - usually the inside end of the bobbin thread getting caught because I didn't secure it well enough.

I've read other reviews that this machine doesn't work well on heavy fabrics, but I was able to hem my husband's jeans easily - 3 and 6 layers of heavy denim fabric.  I wonder if the other reviewers used the correct heavy needle and thread or if they kept their cotton needle in?  But it worked great on the 3 layers, I had to manually move the needle through the side seam area because it was SO thick.

It's still sewing great, still has beautiful stitches!  I'm impressed!  I really didn't expect it to last this long, especially with how hard I've been working it!
