Brother Black Ink Cartridge -- Keeps the machine running!

Pros quick drying black ink does not come off the page onto hands
Cons small cartridge size means needing to buy more often than I like
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  We always use Brother genuine ink cartridges with our Brother machine.
One of the office fax machines is a Brother Intellifax that uses the Brother Ink Cartridge in Black (item # LC21BK). Technically, this fax machine uses four different color ink cartridges … but this review is for the black cartridge.

Description

One ink cartridge is packaged in a small cardboard box. The upper right corner features holographic foil with the words "Genuine Brother". On the back of the box is a date stamp with the words "Use Before".

The ink cartridge is in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag. The front of the bag is clear. On the back of the bag are basic cautions in English and five other languages. The cartridge does not come with installation instructions.

The cartridge is plastic. The sides are somewhat see-through, and the top is black to indicate the color.

The package says this cartridge is for use with: MFC3100c, MFC3200c, MFC5100c, MFC5200c, FAX 1800c.

My Experiences

We use a plain paper fax machine with regular 20-pound paper. The black ink in this cartridge prints well. Usually the images and text look black. Sometimes the text and images have a gray tint to them, but I attribute that to how the original was prepared on the other end. Photographs tend not to print well, looking too dark and muddy. Line art prints neater than a photograph, and the black color comes across well.

The ink dries quickly. Today a fax came across the machine with a very black graphic that was supposed to be a photograph of a chair. Instead the entire image resembles a silhouette. None of the ink came off on my fingers or the other white pages.

The manufacturer says the yield of this ink cartridge is 950 pages with 5% page coverage. I have been keeping track of how long the cartridge lasts. Of course, this varies on how much content is on a page. We usually receive between 15-20 pages a day on this machine. The pages are usually text with a few spam faxes that include graphics. On average, our pages have 40% page coverage. We need to replace the black cartridge about every two months.

I have never had one of these ink cartridges leak in the machine or cause a problem.

Installation Instructions

This cartridge is simple to install. I open the lid of the fax machine to reveal the cartridge holder. The black cartridge has the black top. Press down on the lever holding the old cartridge. Pull out the old cartridge. Remove the small plastic strip from new cartridge and drop it in place, pressing the lever down on top of it. Done!

The packaging gives these instructions.

1. Only open the ink cartridge immediately prior to using it.

2. Keep away from children.

3. Once you open the ink cartridge, use it within 6 months.

4. Please be careful when handling the ink cartridge, otherwise you may get ink on your hands or clothes.

5. Use the ink cartridge within the expiration date printed on the box.

Purchasing

We buy these ink cartridges come from Staples, and pay $19.25 per cartridge. The cartridge retails for $22.99.

Summary

Considering how many pages we receive, and that the fax machine uses ink periodically to self-clean, we are pleased with the number of pages printed per cartridge. Of course, it would help prolong the ink life if the fax spammers stopped sending us notices of great stock tips, mortgage offers, and free trips to tropical isles.

I hope you have found this review useful.
