Britax Frontier 85 Booster in Pink Sky
Pros
9-year lifespan, extended height and weight limits. Biggest 5-point harness seat out there!
Cons
Installation is involved, though not actually technically difficult. Had to read/watch instructions 3-4x.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Especially great for kids who outgrow their convertible seats by weight, but are too young to keep seat belts on/positioned properly. Love having an extended 5-pt harness seat.
This review is for the Frontier 85 in Pink Sky - hopefully someone can create a new section for this colorway, but otherwise I assume it is the same model except for the color!
Just got our Frontier 85 - love this big kid seat! Sturdy, plush, nicely finished. It did take me a few tries to figure out which installation method was best (be sure to try all - in our '06 Prius it is currently LATCH plus top tether, later long-belt-path for when daughter is heavier), but now it's as solid as our Boulevard.
Fit:
My daughter is almost six - currently about 43 inches and a shade under 40 lbs. The shoulder straps are on the bottom slot (two left) and the crotch/seat buckle is at the first setting (also two left), so, plenty of room for growth. I was happy to see that even when she falls asleep the wings and the harness together keep her in perfect position. She can see out the window just fine (I was worried about this when she transitioned from the Boulevard) and thinks the seat is a "big girl seat" because of the cupholders. :)
(speaking of cupholders, I believe on the old Frontier - the one rated to 80 not 85 pounds - they broke off easily, but on this model they are built-in and seem pretty sturdy.)
Seat Features:
The seat has the different install methods printed right on the side of the seat - great for when you just can't find the manual. Height and weight limits are also printed on the seat itself, no more wondering if your child has outgrown their seat or the harness mode.
I like that there are storage anchors for the LATCH grips on the seat itself for when they are not in use. There is also a loop of elastic on the end of the top tether strap, to keep the excess neatly stored away.
I understand that the seat cover is slightly different from the Frontier (previous model) - the F85 has plush fabric on the front portion of the seat, then mesh going up the back. Six weeks in and so far it looks as good as new - no snags, pilling, or dirt.
Our daughter loves her big-girl pink seat and I love that she can be in a five-point harness for longer!
Purchase Info:
Bought ours from Hipmonkey.com (great site, provides car seats to underprivileged families) for $229. I believe this is the first release of this model seat.
