Breville Hand Blender...handy hand blending

Pros cordless, good looking, easy to use, holds a charge
Cons none really
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a sleek-looking small appliance which makes life easier for many cooks. Sturdy housing makes expense justified.
My soup was too lumpy, I was foregoing smoothies because I didn't want to haul out my blender...my life was obviously amiss. Then came the Breville Cordless Hand Blender and everything seemed to click into place.

Model BCS500XL is actually a two-speed model with a high and low function. Out of the box, the complete package includes the rather heavy section that is held in the user's hand, two blender heads, the rechargeable stand and a bracket for wall-mounting the whole kit and kaboodle. Also part of the price is a 34 fl oz plastic mixing jug with a storage lid. When assembled with handle and a blending head, the appliance measures just over 15 inches long.

Upon immediate removal from the packaging, the best thing to do is plus in the charger and place the handle section in the appropriate opening. There is storage for the additional smoothie attachment - each section is very intuitive to figure out - not much learnin' required (in fact, instructions probably weren't necessary at this point). An indicator light will instantly light - red - as it will take about five hours to fully charge at the onset. My impatience determined that in about 60 minutes there was enough charge to at least have the unit whir enough to blend up my potato soup. The rechargeable battery is a 9.6V - comes pre-loaded & I have not owned the unit long enough to determine how long the initial battery will continue to recharge.

USE
I upgraded to this Breville after years of a corded hand blender. Admittedly, in some kitchens this may be a completely useless appliance. Or at the very least, it's that automatic ice cream maker you swore you needed, used a couple times, and now it sits in the basement with the other appliances you swore you needed. Consider a hand blender if you enjoy making:

- soups
- sauces

This is also a great way to make smoothies, mixed drinks, and even baby food. Especially when the occasional drink or what have you is for a party of one or two. It saves on getting the blender out. The smoothie attachment is also great for quickly beating eggs & making milk shakes.

In my case, the primary application is soup. This is, bar none, the easiest way to get a smooth soup without having to transfer hot liquids into a blender and back again. The cord-free status simply ups the ease.

Actually using the blender is easy. On the handle section are three buttons - two to be depressed separately when in use. One is power, the other is low or high speed blending - essentially the same button but pressed with varying degree of pressure. The unit is about three pounds total when the blending attachment is in place - slightly lighter with the smoothie attachment.

Both attachments are put into place by slightly turning the heads onto the handle. Detaching it as easy.

Noise is minimal. Use is easy though there is a starting time where a cook will need to figure out what style works for him/her. The unit is easy to manage and fairly easy to figure out. (For instance, it should be obvious that should the unit be lifted out of a liquid while still running a mess will be in your future.)

CLEAN UP is accomplished sans dishwasher. The handle requires none unless some splashing has occurred - warm water should take care of this. The heads, regardless of which one, can be rinsed off with some warm soapy water.

The Breville comes with a user's manual complete with some recipes & information on the one year limited warranty. The stainless steel housing with black accents make it a sleek look - perfect for getting away with having it sit on the counter.
