Breath of Redundancy?
Pros
Momo, Extra Turns
Cons
Nina, Ending, the final boss
Recommended it?
Yes
I am a huge fan of the Breath of Fire series and have played out both 1 and 2 thousands of times, so naturally I was enthusiastic when I found out a third one would be making an appearance on PSX. But, plot wise at least, I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps it's a lot of the same old same old.
First we start out once more with Ryu, who apparently gets reborn with the same colour hair in ever incarnation (;P) as an orphaned child and meets up with a brash werecat, Rei (who vaguely reminds me of Katt from Breath of Fire 2). It goes from there, the game play not being too horrible really and the added bonus of you getting an extra turn rather delighted me. I think what it truly comes down to is that I'm sick and tired of seeing Nina and the little turnip boy. But I cannot completely bash the batch of characters, for I did love Momo, the bazooka wielding intellectual with big pink hair and bunny ears, and would replay the game just to catch all of her amusing scenes. I also didn't find Garr to be too objectionable though he did remind me of Rand, but we always need those stock characters. (i.e., the buff warrior, bumbling intellectual, idiotic turnip boy.. hrm.. wait)
Graphically it isn't too shabby a game, but not top notch. It somewhat reminds me of Xenogears, but with slightly cleaner backgrounds and characters and thus, more eye candy. That and Momo's bazooka animation never failed to make me snicker.
Sound gets an 'eh' of approval from me. It wasn't awesome, but it didn't make me fall into a homicidal fit from having to listen to the music for hours on end.
The ending, I won't give it away, but it is quite thankless and a severe disappointment as I have found most Breath of Fire endings to be. Personally, I like to be rewarded with a scintillating ending after spending 40 hours on a game and this one was certainly not substantial, a pathetic clip of the aftermath and a J-pop song made me want to right then an there put the CD in the blender and hit frappe.
So all in all, I give this game a big fat rating of 'eh'. The theme was repetitive of past games even though I found it enjoyable, however the redundancy of Nina and exceedingly bad endings was what truly dragged my opinion of the game down. Hopefully for 4 (yes, I'm willing to try again) they will have learned to add a substantial end.
