Trustworthy Economical Bread Machine

Pros This model is economical, attractive, makes a good loaf and is simple to use.
Cons The display panel is hard to read.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend the Breadman TR520 to anyone that wanted a practical, trouble free, inexpensive bread machine to make homemade breads and doughs as the results are excellent.
I bought the Breadman TR520 Bread Machine directly from the company in Oct. 2009 for $61.47 with shipping as a consolation for my Breadman TR900S that I got from Amazon.com 10/06 and was happy with until the rubber gasket inside the pan wore out and was not replaceable.  I could no longer use my machine because of the company not being able to sell me a replacement so I asked for a better price on another model. I do have a Breadman model TR2500BC with all the bells and whistles that I got from a friend that wasn't using it so I didn't need a machine that had a lot of fancy settings.

Since getting my first bread machine in Oct. '06, I have not bought a loaf of bread at the store. I have a family of four so I make at least two loaves a week. I use it mostly for sandwich and sweet fruit and nut breads but I also make pizza dough with it occasionally. I like having two machines, as it takes about three hours to make a loaf and I can make two loaves at once with my two machines.

Although there are some design flaws with the display panel, the TR520 does make good bread. The panel is a light yellow with very small red and white print so the lack of contrast makes it hard to read and the display window is small and has a small triangle that points on the loaf size and color and is difficult to see. The display window also indicates the setting for type of bread when first programming, and then reads the amount of time left for the bread to knead and bake. Compared to my other model with more bells and whistles, this computer panel is simple. When the recipe is done, simply unplug the machine. With my TR2500BC, if you do not press and hold the stop/reset button before unplugging, you may not be able to get any reading on the panel for several hours at least, until the computer resets, which is very aggravating.

The pan can be tricky to snap in place, but I have that with my other Breadman models I've used. From all the reviews I've read on other bread machine models, none are without some design flaw, so I would not turn anyone away from this model for whatever flaw this one has. The machine is not unattractive or excessively big and bulky. It is white plastic on the outside and the lid lifts up and it is light weight. It's not overly noisy and doesn't rock on the counter when kneading any more than the other machines I use. It beeps to indicate when to add fruit or nuts to a recipe when called for. My TR2500BC has a dispenser on the lid that when the program is set to add extras, will dispense at the proper time for you, which is a nice feature, but it's a more expensive machine. For someone that just wants to make bread occasionally, it's not worth the extra money for that feature.

All the recipes that I have tried so far have come out well. I have made hearty whole wheat and fruit and nut breads and pizza dough and have had very good results with all of them. For someone just wanting a simple, economical bread machine, I would recommend this model.
