The Bottom Line:
The BMW 7 Series of electric razors.
I have owned Remington, Norelco and Braun razors. After buying a Braun 10 years ago, I haven't switched brands. The Synchro is my third Braun. The first served me many years before hitting the bathroom floor one too many times. I still have it as a back-up razor. The 2nd I left at my friends' house all the way across the continent in San Diego. So finding myself back in Philadelphia with only the half broken back-up, I decided to buy a new one rather than pay to have the old one shipped from Cali; the rechargable battery had pretty much worn out anyway. Based on the reviews here I decided to splurge on the Synchro.
For me and probably most men, the neck is the hardest area to shave with an electric razor. Brauns have always handled that well, much better than Remington or Norelco did. The Synchro continues the tradition of close shaves. Unlike other electric razors, this one cleans and lubricates itself. But I won't go too much into things that have already been well explained by other reviewers.
$146 is a lot for an electric razor, but I believe that for things we use every single day, we should go with the best we can afford. I don't regret spending the money.
My model has an LED readout that shows the charge level and when it needs to be cleaned. It also tells you how long your last shave was, the usefulness of which is questionable; once you start analyzing the time efficiency of your daily shaves, your life has become too dull. There are multiple various model numbers and variations are mostly on the functions of the LED read out.
The technology is pretty simple to use, but I spent about 20 minutes setting it up, not wanting to screw anything up. Everything about it is well thought out and well designed. The quality on everything is top notch. Once you get over the strangeness of newness (and 20 years of electric razor habits), it's a no-brainer to use.
If you live in an older house with a small bathroom, placement of the charger/cleaner thing may require some thought. You need both a non-switched outlet and a stable flat service. I can configure my bathroom to give me one or other but not both. My simple solution was to set it up on my bedroom dresser and take it into the bathroom with me.
I've had it three months now and only put it through the cleaning function every three or four days when it says CLEAN! I haven't changed the blue cleaning/lubricating fluid yet either. A charge seems to last a month.
If you need a new electric razor and can afford to splurge on the BMW 7 Series of razors, go for it. If your old razor works fine, you can probably wait.
