Simple, Easy to Use Digital Thermometer

Pros Easy to use, lightweight, simple case
Cons No Frills, replacement of disposable tips
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a simple easy to use no frills digital thermometer great for taking a quick reading when your children are sick.
This middle priced digital ear thermometer is simple to use and produces almost instant readings. The days of using the thermometer under the tongue and waiting for several minutes to get a result are long gone.

Use
1. Place a clear plastic disposable cover over the tip of the thermometer.
2. Touch the blue rubber button the digital screen side to turn it on.
3. Gently place the thermometer into your child's ear
4. Use your thumb to press the blue button the top of the unit and hold pressed until it beeps (a couple of seconds)
5. Read the temperature on the digital screen.

It really couldn't be much easier. Start to finish in less than a minute. Then when you are done, simply go to a trashcan and click the gray lever button to release the disposable plastic cover thereby dropping into the trash without even having to touch it!

Features
This is a simple device without frills. The one notable feature is the memory function. It will remember the last reading and it can be recalled by simply touching the power/memory button.

Maintenance
We have had ours for over 4 years and have never needed to replace the battery. I wouldn't say we are heavy users of the device, still it does not seem to be much of an operational cost. If you do need to replace the battery, it can be accessed by sliding off a plastic cover on the bottom. This can be done by pushing firmly down on a small (2mm) diameter plastic hole and then sliding the cover off. They could have designed a more user friendly cover. It takes two 3 Volt Duracell DL 2032 batteries. They sell for a couple dollars each at the store or less online.

Most importantly you will need to maintain a supply of disposable covers (lens filters as they are called). These can be purchased in various size packs. For reference, a 50 pack at Amazon is listed for $4.99 at the time of this review.

Body
It is lightweight at less than a pound. It also fits easily into your hand, but is large enough to grip at 6 3/8"L x 1 3/16"W x 1 7/8"H (162mm x 30mm x 48mm.)

The body is plastic except for the power/memory button which is sturdy rubber material. It is mainly white with a 7/16" (11mm) wide red band on the top. Also, on the top is a circular red plastic area with a 5/16" (8mm) diameter blue button used for initiating the temperature scan. The button is large enough for the average size thumb that it is designed to be used by and the red plastic area is curved ergonomically for the thumb. The rest of the body of the thermometer could use a bit of an ergonomic overhaul as it appears a bit "medical" and cold.

On the bottom is a 1/2" x 3/4" (12mm x 18mm) digital screen that displays the temperature once it is scanned. The screen is covered with a clear plastic with a grey border. Set within the thick gray boarder at the bottom is blue rubbery power/memory button as mentioned above. The gray tip of the thermometer is shaped to fit within a child's ear, but is large enough that it will not go very deep and so there is no risk of damage. There is also a gray lever button to easily remove the disposable plastic cover that goes over the tip once you are done using it.

Case
It comes with a very handy case that easily fits the thermometer and has extra space to store a small box of disposable lens filters. The case is simple -- white with red thread and large red plastic snap to close it at the one end. The flexible case is composed of some sort of plastic reinforced fabric.
