The Best Part of Waking Up

Pros Easy to Use, great cups of coffee even when using the cheap stuff.
Cons Unplug to get clock to shut off, costs of water filter and coffee filter replacements
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The Braun Aroma Deluxe 10-Cup Coffee Maker (model 580) is an inexpensive machine with an expensive taste.
Background:
Last May, we brought coffee back from our honeymoon in Costa Rica and were overjoyed to find the Braun Aroma Deluxe 10-Cup Coffee Maker (model 580) among our wedding gifts. This gift was one of many on our wedding registry at Bed Bath and Beyond. It is sold there for $69.99, although with a 20% off coupon from their mailing list it could come home for as low as $56.

About this Braun Coffee Maker:

Appearance:
This Braun coffee maker is an attractive black color, although it also comes in white. Both are made to match other kitchen items. The entire maker is made of a sturdy, but thin plastic, except for the hot plate, filter, glass pot and its handle.

The glass pot has markings starting at 3 cups and measuring every cup up until 10 cups. The pot has a removable lid. The handle of the pot is made of a heat-resistant gray rubber material for added comfort while transporting and pouring.

The reservoir has a flip back lid. The space for pouring water in is about 3 by 5 inches. On the side of the reservoir is a blue fill line showing how much water is poured into the maker; from 3 to 10 cups.

There is a button to open the filter basket; when pushed it swings open and out from the maker. Inside is a reusable mesh wire filter with handle.

The front of the maker has a silver control panel with black rubber push buttons. The buttons are labeled auto, hour, minute, and on/off. There is an LCD display above the hour/minute buttons.

Features:
This Braun has a fast brewing system to get the best flavor out of even the cheapest coffee. A built in Brita filter helps purify the water before use to make the taste of the coffee even better.

There is a programmable clock, which can be used to program the coffee maker so coffee is ready in the morning before you are. Once coffee is made, the pot automatically shuts off. The two foot long cord can be pushed inside storage compartment of maker for easy storage and travel.

Likes and Dislikes:

The Pot:
- There is added room above the 10 cup mark of the pot to prevent spilling.
- The lid of the pot is removable for easy clean-up.
- Hot plate keeps pot and coffee hot for one delicious cup after another.
- Handle gives hand comfort and support; providing a safe grip on pot.
- Shape of pot's spout makes it hard to pour the last drop out.

The Maker:
- Maker is overall attractive and blends in with other kitchen appliances. We have it sitting on top of our black microwave.
- Easy to make a little or a lot of coffee, although not designed to make under 3 cups at a time.
- The filter basket swings out and away from pot to ensure grinds do not end up on floor. The filter basket can also be removed for easy clean-up.
- Reusable filter means not having to buy or deal with paper filters. Although the filter is not as easy to clean. Once grinds are poured out, it requires some light scrubbing. The filter is a permanent gold-tone filter, but the wire-mesh becomes stained after first use. Replacements are $10.
- A water filter ensures the purest cup of coffee imaginable. If maker is used daily, water filter will have to be replaced after few months. A dial on top can be set to show what month filter was last changed. Replacements are about $7 a piece.
- I can see how much water was put into the pot, to ensure I make the right amount of cups. The reservoir is big enough to fill without spilling water.
- Maker is made of sturdy, but thin plastic, which I believe would break if dropped.

Features:
- Timer allows us to program coffee to wake-up to.
- Clock can be nice addition to kitchen. However, if you do not plan to use program there is no way to shut clock off. Therefore, to save power I have to leave machine unplugged.
- Comes with manual, but is easy to use even without reading directions.

Overall:
The Braun Aroma Deluxe 10-Cup Coffee Maker (model 580) continually makes one great cup of coffee after another. Using the Costa Rican blend in it, makes us feel like we are sitting beside the Pacific Ocean. Even when using cheaper coffee, the results are delicious. This machine is less expensive than others, but it makes a mean cup of coffee.
