The Bottom Line:
Buy it if you love coffee and if you don't love coffee why are you reading this?
I love my Braun KF580 Coffee Maker. I was fairly happy with my old cheap beater coffee maker but when the carafe was accidentally broken I decided to step it up a notch and buy a better caffeine dispenser.
After a lot of research and browsing a lot of department stores I came across the Braun. I liked it first for its stylish design. The stainless and black all tie in nicely and I like the curves. I had to buy it online because it was impossible to find in any stores near me.
As far as the features are concerned the KF580 has a clock and timer feature which I have used only enough times to forget how to use it. Fortunately when you flip the lid to add water there are instructions so you really don't have to memorize any steps but it is really very simple. I stopped using the timer function because the KF580 makes coffee so fast there's really no need to set it up ahead of time. It makes 10 cups and has a level indicator on the left hand side of the reservoir. The level indicator is a neat feature but I find that it is a little off by what the carafe measures but it's not an inconvenience in any way. The filter basket has a button you push to open which is handy. My favorite feature though is the Pause and Serve function since I'm so impatient for my coffee. My old coffee maker had the same function but there was always a little drip when you pulled the carafe out. Not so with the Braun-it stops immediately while you pull it out to pour (nicely designed).
Another feature that at first I was really excited to use was the gold tone reusable filter, but after just a few uses I found that it really changed the flavor of the coffee. It's hard to explain but the coffee had a "nutty" flavor and not in a good way. So I ditched the gold tone and started using nothing but paper filters and the coffee couldn't better.
The maker has a cartridge for a charcoal water filter and while I used the filter that came with the unit I have not changed it since. I personally don't see much of a difference with or without the filter but if you do be prepared to pay for the filters (they aren't cheap).
My only issue with the design and use of the Braun KF580 is the carafe will spill just a little water if you try to fill the reservoir too fast. It happens about 1 out of 4 times I use it but if you are not in a hurry you can do better.
Overall the Braun KF580 is my favorite coffee maker to date. I would recommend it to anyone.
