The Bottom Line:
This Braun 10-Cup Coffeemaker is simple but works well.
Our old coffee pot became incontinent ... water all over the counter. What a mess! Enter the Braun 10-Cup Coffeemaker - (model # KF400). We didn't need anything fancy, and this seemed a good buy.
Description
The Braun KF400 Coffeemaker comes in either black or white. It holds 10 cups of liquid (or 80 ounces). It is compact standing at 12 inches tall and is 6 inches wide, 11 inches deep. There is an area to store the cord, but we keep ours plugged in all the time.
The unit is basic with the coffee compartment swinging out from the front. The lid to the water reservoir on top of the unit flips open and has markings inside to gauge how much water to fill for how many cups of coffee need to be brewed. The machine also has a large on/off switch on the front near the bottom. The carafe is glass with a plastic lid.
Our Experiences
We chose to purchase the white model of this machine. The white outer plastic casing is easy to clean with the swipe of a wet cloth. The glass carafe with lid can be washed in a dishwasher, though we always hand wash it.
Our family does not drink a ton of coffee, but there are occasions when we need to brew several cups of coffee at meal times. This coffeemaker primarily serves as a way to boil water for the many tea drinkers in the family.
I love the compact size of this machine. It has a small footprint compared to the goliath coffeemaker that preceded it. The 10-cup size is perfect for our needs, too.
This coffeemaker has a lid on the top that flips open so that water can be poured into the reservoir. It is great that the lid flips toward the user, and lays flat on the top of the machine. On our old unit, the lid did not lay flat (it stood upright), and it presented the challenge of filling the water well without creating an unintentional flood. This machine has a lid that lays completely flat so that we have complete visibility of the water reservoir. We usually add room-temperature water directly from a Brita water pitcher. However, the glass carafe can also be filled with water and poured into the machine. Lines on the inside of the reservoir make it easy to see how many cups the machine will produce.
The filter basket that holds the coffee swings out from the front of the coffeemaker. Just insert a paper (# 4) filter and pour the coffee grounds inside it. Swing the basket back into the machine until it snugly fits into place. It's great that this unit does not spit or leak. Operation is straightforward.
A warming plate is important for our family. The water runs through the machine, taking about a minute for each cup. The machine is pretty speedy. We usually fill the maker about ten to fifteen minutes before the meal and let the hot liquid sit until we eat. The machine keeps the beverage hot until it is poured into mugs and served. Note that the warming tray does not automatically turn off. You need to manually flip the on/off switch.
Another consideration regarding this machine is that it does not have an outside indicator to show how much liquid is in the coffeemaker. It also does not have any timer or clock settings. It will not grind coffee. This is a simple machine that heats water and keeps the beverage warm until serving time. It works great for us.
Purchasing
We bought this coffeemaker a few years ago from our local grocery store for $29.99.
Summary
This Braun 10-Cup Coffeemaker is doing the job. It boils water, brews coffee, keeps the liquid warm until served ... and does the job without fanfare. It's a nice little machine.
