So is it Hammer Time, yet? An uber-honky?s perspective
The story of three young African-American men trying to survive their lower-middle class surroundings of gang and crime-infested South Central L.A. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Tre, whose aggression and rebellion as a child forced his upscale, workaholic mother (Angela Bassett, very good in a thankless... Read full review »
Vicious cycle
The story is set in the rural areas of southern L.A. were "gang" violence is prevalent and people die and end up being just another person that got shot. This movie takes you into the lives of three young boys as they struggle in their own ways to cope with the negative forces being pressed upon... Read full review »
Streets is Calling
It doesn't take a ton of time for director John Singleton to establish the basic outside theme of Boyz n the Hood. At the very beginning of the movie, Singleton gives us a depressing statistic: One in every 21 black males will be murdered at some point in their lives, and in most cases the... Read full review »
Good film misses the mark
No point in the summary, since other reviews have done that.
For a kid just out of film school, Singleton did good. But he softpedals the gangster to sell the white audience. Doughboy is way too sympathetic. Singleton plugs into the "gangster as protector" mythology that the gangsters...

A Poignant Story About Life N the Hood
This review is part of my Black History Month Write-Off.
John Singleton's debut film, Boyz N The Hood, is a deeply affecting portrait of a group of young African-American men trying to survive on the violent streets of South Central Los Angeles. Singleton received a Best Director Academy...

no one deserves to live like this
There have been many movies about life in black ghettos, but most of them were made by white, mainstream directors using Hollywood money. But with "Boyz N The Hood," director John Singleton approaches his canvas in an expressionist manner. He doesn't concentrate so much on story and plot as he does... Read full review »

Boyz N The Hood
Inner city life has inspired numerous movies in various genres, anything from Comedy, Drama, or just plain shoot em up action. For example "Don't Be a Menace" is a comedy, based after this movie. It makes fun of the ghetto and gangs making the portrayal of inner city kids very untrue. "Friday" is... Read full review »
Finding Manhood in the 'Hood: Singleton's Masterpiece
John Singleton hit a home run on his first try, with 1991's Boyz in the Hood. It was a political, social, and dramatic milestone, depicting South Central Los Angeles not as a ghetto, but as a lower middle class neighborhood with real people. They survive amid violence and frustration. It's a black... Read full review »
Boyz n the hood. Defines the word masterpiece
Fresh from film school, and desperate to make his impact in Hollywood felt. Fresh filmmaker 'John Singleton' (director of this summer's blockbuster 2 fast 2 furious) released this highly-acclaimed, highly charged account about a group of teenagers coming of age and life in LA's violent and volatile... Boyz N the Hood: A Surprising and Moving Story
I was channel surfing the other night. There was truly nothing on t.v. worth watching. I was surprised, however, when looking at the satelite t.v. guide that one of the network stations had a time slot filled with "To Be Announced." I flipped on over and found myself towards the beginning of a... Read full review »

A Review Of Boyz N The Hood
By Tyler Lewis
In researching what critics have said about Boyz N The Hood for this review, I found that it is lauded for reasons (albeit deserved) that skirt the real core of why it is a successful film. Most critics talk about how the script...

I'm not from the hood...
When I sat down in front of this movie I really expected a "gangsta" type of movie. I thought violence would be important to the plot like Menace to Society with actual language and meaning coming in second.
This isn't that type of movie...for the most part anyway. A message is in this...

Singleton's to the point
I don't recall the first time I ever saw this movie. I don't even remember why I saw this movie in the first place. Maybe it was because one of my favorite rappers, Ice Cube, starred in it. Maybe it was because movies about growing up in underpriveledged areas caught my attention. Whatever it was,... Read full review »
What it's like in South Central
"Boyz N Da Hood" marked the directorial debut of John Singleton, a gifted director. It seems as if he put his heart into making this film. There would be mixed emotions from many people about this film, but specifically you knew Singleton was trying to send a message about the low points, not... Read full review »
The arrival of a major talent
I remember being thunderstruck when I first saw the then-23-year-old Singleton's Boyz N the Hood the summer of 1991, and nearly eight years later, the film still packs a tremendous wallop. It is an uncommonly accomplished and mature filmmaking debut, one that has and will continue to stand the test... Read full review »
More real than you think
I think boys n the hood is a great flick showing the lifestyles of people living this lifestyle or are forced into this lifestyle. People watch this movie and think its only a movie but this stuff really happens all over the world (murder, drug selling) This movie tells a story of a couple kids... Read full review »
Great Stuff
Boyz N The Hood is probably the only movie in this genre that I consider even worth watching.
Cuba Gooding Jr. is amazing in this one, you can feel the pain he feels in everyday life. I was pleasantly surprised by Ice Cube's performance as well. This is the only movie I have seen him in where I...

Boyz N the Hood [VHS]
John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee
