I was channel surfing the other night. There was truly nothing on t.v. worth watching. I was surprised, however, when looking at the satelite t.v. guide that one of the network stations had a time slot filled with "To Be Announced." I flipped on over and found myself towards the beginning of a... Read full review »

Pros Solid, vibrant character drama; Ice Cube; moving
Cons Some weak performances

John Singleton hit a home run on his first try, with 1991's Boyz in the Hood. It was a political, social, and dramatic milestone, depicting South Central Los Angeles not as a ghetto, but as a lower middle class neighborhood with real people. They survive amid violence and frustration. It's a black... Read full review »

A Review Of Boyz N The Hood
By Tyler Lewis

In researching what critics have said about Boyz N The Hood for this review, I found that it is lauded for reasons (albeit deserved) that skirt the real core of why it is a successful film. Most critics talk about how the script... Read full review »

Fresh from film school, and desperate to make his impact in Hollywood felt. Fresh filmmaker 'John Singleton' (director of this summer's blockbuster 2 fast 2 furious) released this highly-acclaimed, highly charged account about a group of teenagers coming of age and life in LA's violent and volatile... The story of three young African-American men trying to survive their lower-middle class surroundings of gang and crime-infested South Central L.A. Pros Great cast, plot moves just fast enough, inspires some thought.
Cons Basic plot is a little overblown and gets carried away with itself.

When I sat down in front of this movie I really expected a "gangsta" type of movie. I thought violence would be important to the plot like Menace to Society with actual language and meaning coming in second.

This isn't that type of movie...for the most part anyway. A message is in this... Read full review »

It doesn't take a ton of time for director John Singleton to establish the basic outside theme of Boyz n the Hood. At the very beginning of the movie, Singleton gives us a depressing statistic: One in every 21 black males will be murdered at some point in their lives, and in most cases the... Read full review »

There have been many movies about life in black ghettos, but most of them were made by white, mainstream directors using Hollywood money. But with "Boyz N The Hood," director John Singleton approaches his canvas in an expressionist manner. He doesn't concentrate so much on story and plot as he does... Read full review »

Boyz N The Hood (vhs, 1992, Closed Captioned)

John Singleton emerged from USC film school with his passionate script already written, and at age 23 he made the film that spawned a score of ghetto dramas. From the opening shot--a sign reading "Stop"--to the final message of "Increase the Peace," Singleton's desire to galvanize his audience is clear. The violence destroying South Central Los Angeles is seen through the eyes of Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.), whose intelligence and common sense would be wasted in the 'hood if not for his father, Furious (Laurence Fishburne), who imparts discipline and responsibility to his son. Tre's friends aren't so lucky, though, especially Doughboy (Ice Cube), who has been in and out of institutions since childhood and now sits on his porch with a forty in his hand and a pistol in his waistband. Singleton is ambitious enough to tackle a host of problems, from African American business practices to the bias of the SAT test, but the real power of the film lies in the performances of its principals. Boyz N the Hood [VHS]

John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. --Shannon Gee
