Boston Acoustics Does It Right

Pros Great sound for rather small speaker. Quality product.
Cons None.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  A quality product.
I wanted to place some speakers on my screened porch that overlook our pool. Wanting to mount them high in the corners near the screens where they might get wet, I decided to shop for a pair of all weather speakers. If you want a quality made outdoor speaker, plan on spending a minimum of $200.00 for a decent pair.

Although there are quite a few well-known manufacturers of outdoor speakers, I chose Boston Acoustics. The choice was simple for me as I have had an older pair of Boston computer speakers and love the sound quality.

Outdoor speakers by Boston (Boston Acoustics now sometimes refer to their company merely as Boston) are the Voyager line with seven models in all. The Voyager 4 model is the entry and least expensive pair.

I ordered mine from the Crutchfield web-site and they arrived promptly. I had never purchased from them before and found their service efficient. You can also order these speakers and other audio equipment directly from Boston Acoustics at their web-site if you like. As the prices are about the same, pay attention to any shipping charges when calculating you total cost.

I also ordered a Sony STR-DE197 receiver to power the Voyagers. The Sony was less than the cost of the speakers, but have been told the sound will only be as good as the speakers you send it through.

The Voyager 4 model is a two way speaker rated to 100 watts. I am not an audiophile, but do know that is the maximum amount of power you can pump through these things. Be careful not to crank the volume if you are hooking them to a receiver or amplifier with more than 100 watts output.
The bass, or woofer speaker, is 4/12" and the tweeter is 3/4th of an inch. These sizes get bigger as you go up the Voyager model line. Size really doesn't always matter as proven by my Boston computer speakers.

The housing on the speakers is made of polypropylene, which is a kind of super durable plastic and they come in white or black. I chose black. With the silver Boston name on the front of the speaker they look, well, sharp! The mounting brackets are C type aluminum and the speakers slip right on them. Merely tighten the round knobs to secure them to the brackets which screw into the wall. On the back of the speakers there are posts with holes in the middle for attaching the speakers wire. Just poke them through and tighten the caps that are mounted on them. I should also mention that these speakers are in a wedge shape, so they mount in a tight corner easily. Dimensions are 9 3/4" X 6 7/8" X 5 7/8".

Outdoor or all-weather speakers can be mounted or placed anywhere, but it is recommended that they be put under an eave or some some type of cover so they will last longer.

So how do they sound? The sound is crisp and clear all the way across the pool from my porch, even when you are in the water swimming. I could have gotten a bigger pair of Voyagers, but I am more than satisfied with this pair. I really couldn't see having the volume set louder than the 100 watts these speakers are rated for.
