Love the car, but ruined by typical Ford of America poor quality
Pros
Great handling, good to great engine in ZTS and SVT, well designed
Cons
Either poor engineering or quality control on American version of the car, not European Focus
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great car if no problems. Recommend the car, but beware that many Focus owners have had plenty of visits to the shop.
My wife and I, age 39, both love the car. It is her all-time favorite. The design of the car is great and is perhaps the only American car that can compete with European and Japanese designed cars. This probably reflects that it was born out of Ford of Europe, not Detroit. We have had a Sentra, Civic, and Corrola in the past and prefer the comfort of the Focus. Beware though, the car sold here in the states is not the same as the car sold to the rest of the world as Ford would have you think. Ford changed the suspension to give the American version a softer ride. Many of the changes lead to recalls in the 2000 and'01 models such as front suspension pieces, brakes, and rear wheel bearings. There is even a class action suit filed against Ford on the poor brakes.
Though we have a 2002 model, which has no recalls, we have had problems and have only 15,000 miles. It is in the shop for the second time. Have had problems with the throttle linkage, door handles, headlight, 6 disk radio eating 3 cds, and problems with the rear suspension which has worn out the rear tires already.
When the car works correctly it is great. But also shows me some of the reasons I quit buying Detroit autos 10 years ago. The quality of Ford, at least, has not risen.
