The Bottom Line:
The Bose headphones are expensive but do give the feeling of having your own little world in a less than friendly environment. For this goal, worth the money.
I am an engineer, not a great music buff, but I do appreciate the fine sound reproduction of the Bose headset. The bass response was particularly impressive. I bought the headset for it's noise canceling abilities. Having been tormented by the neighborhood driveway basketball games and barking dogs, I was willing to give anything a try. To my great relief the annoying bump, bump, bump of the basketball was entirely eliminated both outdoors and in the house, where nothing else I tried had been effective. Unfortunately the headset was useless at blocking the higher frequencies of barking dogs out in the yard. I teamed the Bose headset up with a Sony Walkman and it makes a really nice unit. I also found that a good country music tape, which usually has a lot of bass, would silence the barking dogs. The headphones are lightweight and are not annoying to wear for extended periods.
