The Bottom Line:
if you travel a lot and hate the experience, the headphones will make a big difference
I travel a fair amount, living in Hawaii, and the trips to the mainland always take 4 hours or more. Since we take the red eye often, I wanted something to let me sleep. I had used the older sharper image unit and a newer unit and thought they worked ok for the price, but the cheaper ones were uncomfortable. I finally sprang for the new Bose unit this summer on the thirty day trial just before a long trip to Chicago. I got the new one although the older one was about $60 cheaper. The unit was great. The sound canceling lets me sleep. On the occasions when I want to listen to the airplane music and movie, it works wonderfully. Mind you, I am not an audiophile so my standards are different. The unit was very comfortable, but you may have to pop it off every so often because the air pressure in the cabin changes, and it is so air tight that the pressure may bother you. The reason I got the new one in spite of the cost is that the new unit is self contained, and does not have a pack that includes the battery and noise reduction unit. and is hooked up with wires. The only thing you wear is the headset. It works great. The storage unit is well designed and looks great, as well. The unit only requires 1 battery, which may be a problem, but I have used the same battery on 3 round trips of 8-12 hours each, so I am not sure battery life is an issue. All in all, worth the price if you travel a moderate amount especially if you take the redeye.
