The Bottom Line:  Unparalleled sound reproduction and comfort; incredibly effective at reducing ambient noise
Living in New York City, one is constantly bombarded with honking horns and other loud noises associated with urban life. This noise is not only unpleasant, but potentially dangerous to one's sense of hearing. I bought the Bose "noise-cancelling" headphones to combat the blaring city noise, as I do a lot of walking. They perform amazingly well--even when no music is coming through them.

The headphones are ideal for travel as well. On public buses, the engine at full throttle is a mere hum when listening to music through these phones. Subway rides are virtually silent. Even at very low volumes, one gets a sensation of solitude, as the outside world becomes remarkably distant and muted. Furthermore, since they are closed headphones, people in close proximity to you will not be annoyed by blaring music.

The sound is simply the best I've ever heard--and I've owned an assortment of quality headphones. They are unparalleled in the area of comfort as well--I've worn them for several hours at a time with no discomfort whatsoever. Bose has a reputation for quality, and these do not disappoint; top-notch materials are used in all areas of construction, including the handy carrying case. Although slightly over-sized, this case easily accommodates the phones as well as an MP3 player or other listening device.

There are drawbacks, however; the most obvious being the price. Three hundred dollars is a lot to spend on headphones, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a pair that out-performs this offering from Bose. Furthermore, the cord is alarmingly short, and is permanently affixed to a small (2-inch square) box that clips to a belt or pocket. Fortunately, an extension cord and several adapters are provided with the headphones.

The sheer size of these phones renders them impractical for any exercise more strenuous than walking. Also, riding a bike with them on would be extremely dangerous, as one would be unable to hear much of anything. My girlfriend borrowed them for an airplane ride and was astounded by the reduction of ambient noise and engine roar. Incidentally, if you play video games in surround sound, these can come in handy late at night when you don't want to wake anyone.
