Bose hits it on the nose!

Pros Exceptionally light and comfortable. Unbelievably effective noise reduction.
Cons Cost may seem an issue, but you actually get more than you pay for.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you fly or are otherwise subjected to noisy environments and you value your comfort and hearing you'll want these wonderful category leading headphones
I fly a lot and I've owned and used a variety of noise canceling headphones; including the Sony MDR-NC20 and MDR-NC5. Of the two, the NC20 had better audio but lost the highs that the NC5 seemed to excel in. Both headphones irritated my ears. The cups on the NC20 were too shallow and the constant movement of the phones would chafe and cause discomfort. The NC5 was actually more comfortable but noise easily crept around the open foam pads.

Comfort and noise isolation were not a problem with the Bose QuietComfort headphones. Placing them over your ears, you immediately note the tight seal. With the unit turned off, you don't hear much of anything except for the muffled background noise. Turn the switch to on and the background suddenly disappears almost completely. The result is blissful quiet, especially if you are burnt out, tired and need to sleep. Sleeping with the phones in place is easy and as comfortable as sleeping without them (if you could sleep through the noise without them).

Some people will not want to fall asleep. They will be far too busy listening to the headphones. Even the piped in airline audio sounds OK. If you happen to have a decent portable like an MD player, you are in for a real treat. These headphones can actually reproduce faithfully and fully with a broad and rich tone despite the racket going on outside.

The entire unit is a class act. It comes with several different carry options from a neurotic?s protective hard case to a computer bag crusher's nylon headphone sack. Accessories include a carry strap and adapters for dual airplane jacks and home stereo. Both are gold plated for reliability. The headset connects to a small plastic unit that houses the battery, active electronics and a switch that turns the unit on and allows the choice of two gain settings. Some may find the added piece annoying but it clips to the belt and is functionally unobtrusive.

All in all, this impressive headphone works substantially better than the two Sony units I owned. It appears solid and I suspect it will put up with travel abuse for a long time.

If you do a lot of flying or and you find yourself getting off the plane exhausted and disoriented, the constant jet roar may be a large part of the reason. You have nothing to lose by finding out. The Quiet Comfort Headphones are fully returnable after an up to 30 day trial. I'm betting you'll be keeping em....
