A Little Quiet Time ...
Pros
Effective, well made, does as advertised
Cons
Bigger than expected
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Get it if you need to shut out the world for a while, or just enjoy music/movies unadulterated.
Let me start off by saying I have ears that will not keep earphone buds in ... no matter what I've tried. Thus, since the early days of the Sony Walkman, I've been using foldable headphones, mostly the small ones. Problem with them is that I don't get a good audio output due to the designs. The earphones point forward (versus inwards for earbuds) resulting in the loss of some fidelity. Add ambient noise (pollution) from the surrounding (read diesel engine buses, jackhammers, police sirens &etc) and the total enjoyment to music is gone.
Recently convinced myself that I want to listen to my music without too much other sounds. I first knew of the product through an advertisement in an airline magazine, but the reviews on epinions pushed me over the edge.
Made the purchase from Crutchfield.com. Prompt service and reasonably priced compared to the other sites. I received it 3 days after making my order. The package seemed quite large and I understood why when I opened it. The headset itself is in a leather-type bag. First impression is that Bose spent a good deal of time designing not just the headset, but the whole package too. The box contained all the necessary documentations and get this BATTERIES ARE INCLUDED. Also included is a shoulder strap for the bag, a felt-type pouch if you don't want to use the big bulky bag. The system (my description) comes with 3 adapters: airline 2 prong, the older big stereo audio/headphone adapter, and ... something else. There is also a belt clip for the switch unit.
The whole package fits snugly in the bag, there is a little elastic mesh netting pouch that holds the switch unit. Taking the switch out is the only annoying thing for me. I'm half afraid the pouch will tear when I pull the switch out (hasn't happened yet!)
A very confident touch (some people may find it arrogant) is that Bose put in a number of "business cards" on the flap, letting you do some word-of-mouth advertising for them should the opportunity arises.
I immediately put it on (while in the office) and turned the switch to 'Lo'... immediately my world fell awfully quiet. The cushion on the cups fit around my ears creating a virtual vacum-effect. Most of the noise, computer fans, a/c vent, background chatter, was immediately cut off. I was thoroughly impressed. If given the choice I would have kept it on all the time, unfortunately I have to use the phone very often thus I had to take it off (aw shucks!)
I couldn't wait to get home to test it more. I took my Sony MD player and plugged it in ... man, the sound was just so much better, and I could still hear my wife talking ... amazing. With the big fan on my computer cancelled out, it was only the music.
Well, that is the good part ... the 'bad' part is that it is bigger than I expected. I thought it would be good for business travel with my new laptop (Fujitsu P-2046 ... do look out for that review). I guess there must a compromise made. I watched Final Fantasy on my laptop with the headphones ... I heard sounds I didn't hear on the Home Theater system!
On the whole, if you are looking for a tiny bubble of quiet so that you can:
1. hear yourself think
2. meditate in a noisy world
3. concentrate on a project by switching the world off
4. listen to music/videos like you've never before
just know that it is not the most portable even though Bose made it very simple for you, by supplying the adapters and the excellent bags.
That's all folks ...
