Pack up your speaker system and your CDs -- this is all you need!

Pros Superior sound, compact, elegant design
Cons Remote won't let you access iPod menu
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Finally -- a way to share your iPod music that sounds wonderful, looks great and saves you from having to have big stereo components and CDs everywhere!
It's 2008. Is there any reason to devote piles and piles of space to your CD collection anymore? You've already loaded all your music onto your iPod anyway.

"But I'm having a party and it's not like I can have everyone listen to my iPod through those little bitty earbuds!" you say.

Well of course not. That would be ridiculous. Enter the Bose Sound Dock.

This unit is about the size of a shoebox lid, stood up on the long edge. There is a little tiny platform at the front on which you rest your iPod. (The Sound Dock comes with a number of little plastic docking plates, so you can configure your Sound Dock to accept whichever size iPod you own.) Once you have plugged the Sound Dock into the wall and snapped your iPod into the Sound Dock, you are all set. Really. It's just that easy.

Bose is known for delivering dynamic, rich sound, and this Sound Dock does not disappoint. No matter how loudly you crank it up, the sound stays true and smooth. (And believe me, this machine can get loud. Ground-shaking, neighbor-bothering loud. If you want it to.) But it also delivers lovely sound at soft volumes, too. It also does a good job at filling the room with sound. Even though the Sound Dock doesn't have speakers all over the room, it still projects sound evenly around your space.

The remote control is small -- about the size of a credit card, although it's maybe 1/8" thick. You can turn the iPod on or off, skip to the next song or the last song, and adjust the volume up or down. If you want to switch to a different playlist, though, you will have to do it on the iPod itself. The remote doesn't offer a way to navigate through menus like that. The remote is pretty powerful, though -- it works at great ranges and funky angles. The remote uses one of those coin-shaped batteries, and they last a long time. (Mine is going on two and a half years old, being used almost all day every day, and it's still working great.)

But by far, the awesomest thing about this Sound Dock is the minute amount of space it takes up. You can sit it on a side table, a bookshelf, even a fireplace mantle. It's minimalistic enough to blend in with your decor. But it delivers utterly wonderful sound. Who ever thought you could get all your music and terrific sound all in less space than a shoebox?

Please note: I'm not an audiophile. I'm a person who really enjoys having music in my home, but I'm not someone who knows from woofers and tweeters. If you are an audiophile, I still think you'll love the Sound Dock. But I just wanted you to know where I stood on the stereo snob scale.
