Great Speaker System, But You Can Get The Same Sound For Less

Pros Small size, smart styling, good sound
Cons Very pricey (even the mounting brackets), can't expand or upgrade, limited compatibility
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Bose systems like this are great for receivers running Pro-Logic, 3-Stereo or 2-channel sound modes. For home theater setups, shop around.
How This Speaker System Has Performed

I have always been pleased with the sound coming from my Bose speakers, however I wouldn't turn away more, tighter bass.

Now that I have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver, I've discovered that the Bose AcoustiMass system isn't very compatible. And it certainly isn't expandable.

Why I Purchased This Model

I have an old pair of Bose 2.2 bookshelf speakers that were given to me used by a friend. I've always been amazed by the sound they reproduce and the incredible volume of air they move for their size.

Bose seemed to be the ticket. So, when it came to buy speakers, I looked at the AM5 III. It sounded better than some other less expensive setups and was popular among consumers.

What I Like About It

The Bose AM5 III is a sharp looking, compact speaker system. Since I have the bass module in a rather obscure location, people don't know it's there. They are just amazed that such sound could come from 2 sets of tiny cube speakers.

I think it produces great sound for its size, paper cones or not. Paper cones are cheap (versus today's polys and metals), but it doesn't sound that way. Even so, for this price we deserve better.

The system has never faulted. No distortion has been heard, whatever the volume level (and it's been loud).

What I Don't Like

The Bose isn't truly compatible with digital 5.1 systems. The only way to hookup these Bose speakers is by attaching the bass module to the receiver, then the satellite speakers to the bass module. This makes the separate subwoofer output on a 5.1 digital system totally useless. My Sony STR-DE475 stereo helps with this by redirecting the subwoofer signals to the other speakers (which in turn sends them to the bass module since its signal comes from the two front speaker connections), and it sounds great.

The bass module is nothing more than a passive subwoofer. It actually takes some of the power driving the sound to run itself.

The bass needs to be tightened up a bit as it can be a little on the boomy side. And more of it wouldn't be bad either.

The price is high... and it's fixed. The only time you'll see the price go down is when Bose puts it on sale.

Overall

Great for 2-channel, 3-Stereo or Pro-Logic receivers; but shop around and compare for home theater systems.
