In his "Slackjaw" column for the New York Press, Jim Knipfel turned his paranoia, irritation, neurosis, hypochondria, and political irritation into an art form. In his dystopian novel UNLUGGING PHILCO, his paranoia has become reality. The novel imagines a parallel America where, in the aftermath of a catastrophe known as "the horribleness," the government has clamped down on civil liberties with absurdist zeal: implants are buried in your skin, there's an anti-porn police squad, and you can win free gifts if you rat out your neighbors to the feds. He doesn't have any radical notions, he just wants to be left alone. But when he meets an alluring revolutionary, he finds himself in the middle of a madcap battle for the future of America.
