The Bottom Line:
A great read for everyone. It's not for the vampire enthusiast, but rather for anyone who enjoys a love story with twists and turns.
The Twilight Saga is no stranger to most of the world. It has swept the world off their feet with it's intricate love story and characters we feel compelled to relate with. For the most part you hear about young teenagers raving over the series, frantically collecting memorbilia of this pop culture phenomenon. It was this fact that originally steered me away from the books, as I thought I was surely much too old for such a fantasy.
I picked up "Twilight", the first book in the saga, in November of 2008 after watching the movie a week before. A young relative of mine, only 12 years old at the time, had been reading the book and found it to be incredibly interesting. I went to watch the movie to see what the hype was about, expecting to be dissappointed. Turns out I couldn't get the story line out of my head. That's when I decided to go ahead and pick up the first book and read it during an overnight at work. Might as well be able to keep up with my young relative in conversation, right?
I have to admit I was a little embarassed that after the first 5 chapters I was hooked, or rather infatuated. I immediately had to go out and buy the entire set, and managed to read all four books in the course of that week. Everywhere I went a book went with me. I walked through my house with the book open, reading it as I went. It caused a few bumps and bruises, but that didn't waver my involvement with the characters' lives that were unfolding before me.
The characters of the Twilight Saga are all very real. They each are as complex as the other, even the minor characters seem to have a lot of thought put into them. It is clear that Stephenie Meyer did much more research into the characters than you get to read in the books. She claims on her website that the whole series stemmed from a vivid dream she had of a vampire and a girl in a meadow. I applaud her for pursuing this dream of hers because it has certainly paid off. Not only has she become an extremely successful writer, but she has inspired those around the globe to read in an age where television and video games rule. Fantasy is back in style.
The Twilight Saga is a great read that you will feel compelled to reread a couple times. The feelings that it evokes in it's reader are pleasant and addicting. If you feel embarassed to read the series because you feel you are "too old", don't. These books are for anyone who enjoys the feeling of love and the dedication that love creates in each of us to another.
A MUST READ of this century.
