A breath of fresh Eyre! for an (the) Englishman in America to find Thursday. What a wonderful lass she is and a exotic place she lives, Swindon........ If you plan a trip there after reading the book be prepaid to move out of the town quickly and get on over to Bath ASAP.

The book has... Read full review »

The Eyre Affair

Pros clever, interesting, fun, outrageous
Cons some characters underdeveloped

Every once in a while I read a book that I can't quite wrap my head around. I find it interesting and fun, yet I know there is stuff that is going on that I'm not grasping. I can't even really decide if I like this kind of book, but I find that this type do make for good book club discussions... Read full review »

An Eyre-born, frolicking read.

bydeadcoil Jun 8, 2004

Pros Entertaining as all-get-out, extremely witty and full of excellent satire and humor.
Cons Many will not perceive the humor, some jokes far too highbrow for normal populace.
Recommended it? Yes

Being a published writer means I've become one heck of a snooty old goat when it comes to reading for pleasure. I no longer have any ability to turn a blind eye to the technical gaffes of other authors - I had to rewrite my novel no less than five times, and in the process I was forced to learn all... The Eyre Up There

Pros exciting, clever, original, and oh, so irreverent
Cons can occasionally get tied up in its own cleverness
Recommended it? Yes

The world of Jasper Fforde's imagination seems like an awfully interesting place. Sure, everything looks pretty familiar on the surface, but look a little closer and there are a few odd differences, almost as if our world were re-envisioned by someone with deep, honest love of British literature... Pros Great wit, great style, brilliant imagination and a heroine who doesn't take herself...
Cons I worry: Will the sequel be as good as the original?
Recommended it? Yes

Imagine a world where people care deeply about literature and the arts. I don't mean a world in which legislatures pass funding bills for high school art classes and English departments while paying lip service to the value of culture and education. I mean a world where it's profitable to pass off... Read full review »

Personally, I'd go inside some Victorian Erotica

Pros Wonderful images and setting. Also the writing
Cons characters aren't too deep, a bit of illogic to the world
Recommended it? Yes

The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde, is a wonderful literary concoction. Creating a world where literature is king, Fforde has a masterful sense of style and setting that I haven't seen equaled in a while. It has everything from cloned dodos to time travelers to stories within a story. Only a sense... Read full review »

For the love of literature

Pros Imaginative and fun. Lots of food for thought for book lovers
Cons A bit childish at times. I didn't want it to end.
Recommended it? Yes

What is The Eyre Affair? Simply it's a brilliantly playful novel by Jasper Fforde, which cuts across literary genres in the same manner that it's protagonist can enter and play with a text.
The book takes place in 1985 in an England in a world sort of like our own but with some differences... Read full review »

A Literary Spoof: The Eyre Affair (not for Jane Eyre fans only)

Pros Absolutely wonderful, literate read, whether you have read Jane Eyre or not.
Cons Some readers may get lost in the literary and temporal puns.
Recommended it? Yes

The Eyre Affair, by Jason Fforde, is a wonderful break from all routines of reading. A melange of mystery, fantasy, and literary knowledge, it brings to life not only its own characters (Literature Detectives as part of any decent police force) as well as characters from Jane Eyre. While it borrows... Read full review »

This is a book for readers who love books, fiction especially. Imagine being able to slide into one of your favorite books and interact with the characters. Imagine books being as important to society as religion -- more important, actually.

It is difficult to categorize this book. Sort... Read full review »
