The Bottom Line:
A joyous, faith filled life shored up through a safe, personal relationship with our sovereign God is a basic tenet for much of Christendom.
Jake Colsen's - So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore foster's questions regarding what someone might do were they to meet one of Jesus' disciples alive and well and living in our modern times. It is an intriguing premise especially because we live in a time when many believe strongly in our God, however not as many find the necessity, fulfillment, or old time compunction for attending church service as once was found in our country.
Weary, disenchanted gospel minister Jake Colsen finds himself party to a fuming dialogue carried on between a group of people who declare they loathe attending church and an unexpected outsider, John. Before long pastor Colsen realizes his new acquaintance exhibits an eerie similarity to what we know of the apostle John.
As Jake and the man who is so like Jesus' much-loved follower become friends, John dares Jake to open his heart to Christ's abiding love. A family predicament and struggles at work, as well as Jake's own dwindling faith are counterbalanced by Jake's growing comprehension for what his life should be like.
Jake's quandary heightens following his introduction to a man who speaks of Jesus as if he had known Jesus in person. This narrative details Jake's journal as he records thirteen conversations, comprising thirteen chapters, taking place over a period of four years Jake has engaged in with his newfound friend.
John's way of living impacts much of what Jake has previously thought regarding Christian living and Christian behavior. As his world turns on its head with a friend demanding that Jake lie for him; Jake begins to face his innermost fears while facing to devastating personal circumstances and comes through his difficulty filled with joyfulness and feeling the free will he always thought was possible but had not yet really understood.
A joyous, faith filled life shored up through a safe, personal relationship with our sovereign God is a basic tenet for much of Christendom. Realizing that tenet in its fullness is something few really understand, attain or experience; a great many of move through life always hoping and seeking while continuing to feel we cannot or do not measure up, have not yet reached the apex in its entirety and may not feel the closeness we want despite continuing to ‘fill a pew' on Sunday morning.
By squarely facing his own dissatisfaction with his own religious life; Jake comes to understand that he will need to abandon the old routines that are causing his faith relationship to become rote before he can revive the joyous love that swept his heart when he first realized in a closer walk with God is possible.
I found Jake Colsen's - So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore to be a compelling, thought provoking read centered on one man's renaissance from a life as a performance-based Christian to entering into that loving friendship with Christ that becomes the focus of everything he thinks, accomplishes and says.
So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore is a well written, fast paced work designed to draw the reader into the work and begin thought processes regarding the reader's own life and thought regarding personal living, church attendance and life in general.
Happy to recommend Writer's Wayne Jacobsen and Dave Coleman's Jake Colsen's - So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore.
