Would you like me to read you a bedtime story?
Pros
Interesting Illustrations, good book
Cons
It isn't really a story
Recommended it?
Yes
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown was one of the first books we bought our second daughter. It was a Christmas gift on her first birthday and has quickly become a favorite for her as well as her older sister.
This is a very simple and sweet story. At first this book was not on my list of "must-haves". I had seen it in the stores and it didn't really strike me as that terrific of a story. After hearing so many wonderful things about it I decided to go ahead and purchase it, okay so I got a really good deal on it too, LOL.
We bought the Goodnight Moon board book because our daughter was only a year old and we did not want the book getting torn up. This book is sturdy and perfect for babies as it can withstand almost anything they can dish out.
The Story
Goodnight Moon is very simple. The book is about a boy bunny in pajamas who should be going to sleep. Like most children he is putting it off. The book starts off like this:
In the great green room
There was a telephone
And a red ballon
And a picture of-
Throughout the first half of the book the author describes the bunny rabbit's room and what is in it, including the old lady whispering "hush". The second half of the book is the bunny saying goodnight to all of the things in his room, and outside, prolonging sleep.
The Illustrations
Goodnight Moon is illustrated by Clement Hurd and I have to say that the illustrations are one of the things I like best about this sweet book. Children probably won't notice just how much thought went into the illustrations of this book, but I sure have. My husband really likes the illustrations also and I believe he is the one who really pointed the difference out to me.
Hopefully I can adequately describe the illustrations for you. The book starts out with the bunny's room. There is a fire burning in the fireplace and stars shining out the window. There is also a lamp on the nightstand table which is on. Even though it is bedtime it is still pretty light in the bedroom. The next two pages (which are side by side) are black and white) they are close ups of things in the bunny's room (pictures on the wall). When you turn these pages the next 2 pages are in color and show the whole room.
It goes on throughout the entire book like this, alternating color pictures of the room (side by side) with side by side black and white pictures. Each time you go to the next color pictures you will notice it has gotten a little darker in the room. It is very subtle, but oh so neat. The tableside lamp glows a little differently, the green walls are no longer as bright, the lights in the dollhouse are a little brighter, and so on and so forth until at the end of the book the room is dark. Even the moon in the window changes position in the book.
This really shows how long the bunny has prolonged sleep. At the end of the book the bunny has said goodnight to everything and is finally asleep in his dark room.
But, do the kids like it?
You bet they do. Both my 2 year old and 4 year old love this book. They get excited when I bring this one in the room to read. There are things that are familiar in the book to toddlers, like the kittens, the bears, the moon and this teaches them to look at the pictures and read along.
This book is also easy to remember, hence easy for my 4 year old to read along with me. She has memorized most of the words and can read the book with me.
The board book is sturdy and in a year looks almost brand new even though we have read it many times. It is easy for my youngest daughter to carry around and fits nicely in the diaper bag to keep her occupied when we go places.
This book is a hit in our house. I am glad that I listened to the people who told me that this classic is a good book. It truly is a cute little book and I highly recommend it.
