The Bottom Line:
This is a must for any library whether you are a parent or grandparent.
Ok, I will start this review with a confession. I have three copies of this book. I have it in paper back, hard back and a cardboard book copy. Wheww! I feel much better now that I have got that off my chest.
I had no idea that this book by Margaret Wise Brown would be such a hit at my house. I believe that the reason my daughter liked this book were all of the bright and recognizable pictures that were drawn by Clement Hurd. There is something comforting to children when they see things in books that they too have in their home.
Young children my daughter included love rhyming books and songs. The calm cadence in this book is perfect for lulling your tired toddler to sleep. I have several friends who used this book with their children with whom they were having trouble getting to settle down at night.
The story is such a simple yet timeless story. The little rabbit in the story goes through his own bedtime ritual. He says goodnight to all of the objects in his room. Be warned you may get tired of saying goodbye over and over but the children never tire of hearing goodbye. We say goodbye to a cow jumping over a moon, a comb, a brush, a red balloon, stars and kittens.
Even before my daughter was able to talk she loved for me to point out different things on each page and she would point to them. The pictures are all bright which makes this wonderful for young children.
This book published by Harper and Row is a stress reliever at our house. You can't help but be relaxed by the rhythm of the words in this book. It became part of our bed time ritual.
If you are looking for a gift for a new parent or even grandparent this is one that they will love and probably no one else has given them. You can find it at any bookstore or even at discount stores like Kmart and Walmart.
After I started wearing out my original copy of Goodnight Moon I bought a hardback copy of the book that I kept on a shelf for me to read at bedtime. I let the kids have our old copy. I was thrilled when I found a cardboard copy of the book. Now even the smallest child can enjoy looking at the wonderful pictures in the book. It is so cute to see a preschooler "read" this book to a toddler.
If you don't have this book in your collection purchase it you will not be sorry. It is a sad day when your child does not want to hear this story before bedtime anymore.
