Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse doesn't disappoint this Twilight fan.

Pros fast and easy read, interesting storyline, more Edward, Bella, and Jacob
Cons can be melodramatic in some parts
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  If you are into the Twilight series, then reading Eclipse really isn't optional.  Luckily it is an enjoyable and easy read.
I wasn’t interested in the Twilight series of books until a fellow science-teacher coworker confessed that she was totally hooked.  When one of my classes saw her pass off the first book, Twilight, to me, they were super-excited and vowed to lend me the rest of the books so I could enjoy she story as much as they did.  They lent them to me, I enjoyed and tore through them, and then I was at the end of the series which felt like a dead end.  I was happy to discover that two of the books had been turned into movies so I watched them, and then had to wait for just another month or two to see the adaptation of the third book, Twilight Eclipse, in the movie theater.
Unfortunately, one of my organs decided to swell up and then just die inside of me, so my summer didn’t quite go the way I had planned and I wasn’t able to leave the hospital/house in time to see the movie in theaters.  I’m looking forward to finally seeing the movie version of Twilight Eclipse in the next couple of months, so I decided to buy the book version so I could refresh my memory on the storyline.  I just finished re-reading the book and it is as compelling as I remembered it to be.

The Premise

Twilight Eclipse picks up the story after Edward (vampire) tries to kill himself because he believes that Bella (human and the love of his life) has killed herself by jumping off of a cliff.  Bella rushes to find him before he is harmed, and they are free to live their strange life of vampire boyfriend/human girlfriend during their last months of high school.  Unfortunately, there is a group of 20 newborn vampires nearby who are incredibly strong and blood-thirsty and who are completely ravaging the town of Seattle.   Eclipse follows the Edward’s family, The Cullens, and a local tribe of Quileute Indians (many of whom are werewolves) as they try to determine who is creating the new vampires and how they should deal with them.  Because her boyfriend is a vampire and her best friend is a werewolf and the two groups are sworn enemies, Bella is often torn between her love for Edward and her loyalty to her best friend Jacob.  This was supposed to be the final book in a trilogy, but the author decided to add a fourth book (Breaking Dawn) to the Twilight Saga so it is third in a series of four novels.

 My Opinion

During my first reading of Twilight Eclipse, I eagerly tore my way through every page and loved every second of it because it provided me more information about this vampire/werewolf story that I never expected to find so interesting.  That being said, a second reading of the book actually started to try my patience because Edward was so overprotective and dramatic about letting Bella out of his sight.  The whole tug-of-war for Bella’s affections and Jacob’s refusal to just act as a friend got old after awhile too.   The framework of the story is solid, but I felt like I was reading a cheesy romance novel in some parts.

At 628 pages in paperback, this is a lengthy novel but it is still a fast and easy read.  I read it in 30-45 minute chunks each evening after work and finished it in less than a week.  This is a book that you can curl up with during a cold winter evening, but also something that you can read with other distractions around like on a plane or a crowded beach.

Overall Opinion

Twilight Eclipse is the interesting and compelling story that I remembered it to be.  There are some moments where the writing is a bit too melodramatic for my taste, but I enjoyed reading it and found it difficult to put the book down when I had to start dinner or deal with the rest of my daily chores.  I definitely would recommend this book to people who are looking for an interesting story, but you really need to start with the first book in the series, Twilight, in order to truly get the full effect of the plot and to better understand what has happened in the past and why characters interact in the ways that they do.
